Hello I got an amazing ortho named dynaflat

It was the middle of the line of victor’s ortho headphones.

It is amazingly similar for electrostat sounds. They tuned this for combine ortho into electrostat sound.

Interesting!

Unfortunately, the CTX-3 uses a dynamic or 'moving coil' transducer, not an orthodynamic/planar type.

Dynamic drivers are characterised by the circular coil of copper housed in the back of the driver, where it is usually surrounded by one or two circular magnets; whose pistonic motion is only active at the tiny surface area of the coil where it touches the cone-shaped diaphragm.

Orthodynamic/Planar drivers are characterised by a metallic trace over the entire flat diaphragm surface, where it is usually 'sandwiched' on both sides of the diaphragm by a large perforrated magnet, or large magnet array; whose pistonic motion is active over the entire surface of the diaphragm.

I am looking to replace the earpads on my HP-3 and HP-1, any recommendations? Right now they have the original pads on them and they are pretty much flat.
HP-3 you can use 65mm round earpads, and double sided adhesive film. There many on Amazon, in my experience thin corrugate pleather work best.

PS - I found that repeated application of a hair drier for a few seconds works best to remove the old adhesive. Just make sure you do it on the baffles without drivers in them. :)

I got these earpad off ebay for my yamaha hp-1 and diy woodie ortho. Very comfortable and high quality. Improve the sound in all sector and have a good seal. but if you feel that hp-1 have too much bass this earpad is not for you because it increase the bass quantity substantially.

I actually use this same manufacturer for the earpads on my transplants. This company also makes earpads for the Sony MDR-ZX700 and I can speak to the quality of the leather that these guys use. I like it very much both from textural/physical and acoustic perspectives, they sound very good imho (better than Brainwavz Oval Sheepskin ime).

All that being said, I have had very poor experiences with aftermarket pads and vintage Yamaha ortho's. Ime the best earpads are the stock earpads, sadly. If it were my headphone I would buy some very, very thin leather. Then I would unstitch the stock earpads and replace earside pleather with genuine leather. This will alter tonal character slightly but should retain most of the stock headphone's sound profile.

The issue is that the foam has gone flat, the leather is still mostly ok :( i don't think the pads can be saved like that but I'll keep them around in case the new pads seem worse.

Shipping looked very expensive until I realised that they have different listing's for each market :D found the EU listing and they ended up very cheap! Will order once I get home, I am going to have a look through their store to see if they have pads for any of my other headphones, like my K245 shells with HP-50A drivers :D

Got around to HP-3 transplant today:

As I suspected, the HP-3 extends in the bass much much better than HP-50A in almost exact same enclosure. Also HP-50A is dark and brooding which needs velours to liven them up. HP-3 wants leather to seal in sub-bass.

These are the earpads that I use with my KH-100.5's. I only have one pair, but they are the best I have heard. I need to make a second pair. These are very pleasant and quite amazing for what I paid to build them, imho.

I have Ortho fever 🤒
Wow, an MCS8730. Very cool. I've looked for one a few times but never turned up anything. Nice grab.

That receiver looks serious, too. :smiling_imp:

^ YH-100, mini grey hybrid ovals

The pads were stacked on top of stock pads. These pads actually sound pretty good and seem like an improvement over stock, more bass and highs and no bass release issues. They fit around the ears but its very snug but still an improvement over stock deflated pads in terms of comfort.

YH-100 has a 2.5kHz peak that can present vocals as slightly screechy but its not apparent with all music I tried.

From memory, YH-1 tonality is relatively neutral, but doesnt have as good microdetail retrieval though the difference isnt huge. YH-100 bass however hits harder. Getting YH-100 to sound more balanced would require more skill and patience than I possess. I will mod YH-1 instead…

edit: missed a spot
