...and I was unable to get ahold of Faust via PMs. So until we hear from him, it's not coming back.

Received these today. Looks great but sound just a tad below a Fostex T50. Very good mids and thats about it.

Did you buy the ones on ebay? I've been curious about the Aiwas since Kabeer brought them to our attention. So there's not a lot of bass?

I did, there is bass but not as good as my Fostex T50. Given it share some similarity with the T50 and SS-100. I still need to hunt down the 100 for the trifecta. I'm sure once the 500 is modded it will sound superb.

Have you tried the mylar NADs? I have those and a modded SS-100, and find they sound absolutely nothing alike.

I have both the mylar and kapton version. Forgot which was the silver and gold. The kapton is modded i think and sounds similar to a LCD-2 while the other sound different. Of the three, NAD RP18 , SS-100 and HP500 which one has the closest driver resemblance to the original Fostex T50?

Good luck finding anyone who has owned, let alone heard all four of them.
I agree on the modded kapton rp18 - does somewhat resemble an lcd-2.

Id say the kapton RP18 is basically identical. Would love to be corrected though.
The mylar version has a tenser diaphragm, which produces some... stuff, as far as sound is concerned. It has lower (measured) distortion than the SS-100, but its not as clean.

Mods were done by Don a while ago. I believe some padding using felt? and some of the
Sound absorber material on the cups. He would have to chime in for the exact mods. Almost forgot but
Also a 4 pin xlr cable too. I tried using similar mods on a YH100 and it gave very good results.

I have been fortunate enough to have had them and a few more at the same time , sadly my acoustic memory is lacking and I am not able to give you specifics, although I can tell you they are all fine headphones. Kabeer's modded HP500 do stand out in memory as being special.

again memory fails me - there are some standard rules but exactly what specific materials end up used depends on the performance of the particular set at the time. I do not recall exactly what was used.
