Thought about bidding on them, but also thought 35 € a bit too high even if they were orthos. Nice to know they turned out ok in the end.

35 € for an old ortho is pretty dear. I think you should try more mods to get the full worth of your money.

Quite enjoy the convolved HOK now. Big step up from what conventional modding could do - though it has to be said that the digital bass boost needed for the HOK to reach the level of my bass-lite HP-50 does distort at higher levels around 100 Hz or so. Still, quite good for lower-volume listening.
 
No idea why the convolution from one phone to another worked so well here but has failed with some other phones. For sure the channel balance convolution works almost perfectly, so it may have something to do with similarities in pad and baffle-ear chamber dimensions between the target and source. Investigations ongoing, and, as always, carried deep into the morning hours.

Listening to my new'ish yamaha YH-3 and I'm digging the sound but I'm just not the basshead i used to be. won't pass judgment until i have used them for a few more months. Any suggestions for replacement pads? They are worn and I'm sure that's affecting the seal to my ear. I might try to find a new home for them and nice new pads would be a big plus.
 
Also does anyone know of a good product to clean headphones? I have a growing collection of audio gear and some of the used stuff i get can be outright filthy. Armorall works but i dislike the oily feel and smell it leaves.

You are aware that the general recommendation with those phones is to mod them inside the cups? Though usually the modding aims at reducing bloated bass, so if you prefer the bass as it is, that sort of modding may not be needed.
 
Someone recommended the Sony V150 pads, but I've not tried them. The Sennheiser HD 25 pads might do as well, but I've not tried them either.

MDR30 has experience with V150 pads on the HP-3 (same construction as the YH-3).

Since you edited your post, let me rephrase my response as well.
 
Put felt into the cups. It flattens out the bass response. Instructions for this are throughout the thread, it's a staple mod.
 
Oh, and I see you're already selling them. I hope $95 wasn't what you paid, and if it was, you probably won't manage to get it back. Should perhaps mod them and see what they can do for you.

This is what it looks like with the chrome ring removed. Lid screwed down, and ring in place, it's virtually a closed design.
 

 
 
Original damping was a piece of whitw felt and foam. The foam had disintegrated so I replaced it with two new layers. Originally the Hosiden sounded dull and honky. Did not improve much fully open. I tried a small reflex dot for treble extension and the damping on the picture and the sound became quite nice. The let-down are the pads - vinyl and with a loose fit. Some quick experiments with HP50 pads that was lying around indicated that the right pads could make this a quite enjoyable headphone.

Can you feel how many holes there are underneath the damping there? Or shine an LED flashlight through . It would narrow it down.

That does not look like our normal SFI driver. Your driver is too large (50mm) and it has too many holes.

Don't know if any of you were wondering, but even though the ATH-M2 is also 150 Ohms it has the "standard" 37mm, 9-hole, SFI driver and is part-swappable with the ATH-2.

^ really I thought they were bigger for some reason , so that rules them out.
 
Anybody else got any ideas that can pin these down for OEM, these look like they would pump quite nicely given the size of those holes.
