^ really I thought they were bigger for some reason , so that rules them out.

Anybody else got any ideas that can pin these down for OEM, these look like they would pump quite nicely given the size of those holes.

Indeed. I make them to be about 4mm if the pictures are both the same scale. Any chance they were enlarged in house after purchase from source?

maybe we are witness to the earliest evidence of the O.O.M. (=Original Ortho Modder similar to O.G. but ortho related equivalent.)
If it doesn't match up with anything else made so far discovered, I would think it was done special request (?) during manufacturing.

Fairly messy job without proper cleanup tools for the particles ( as some members in here will attest to )Pretty interesting how magnets are made. Have to love youtube for pretty much anything under the sun now
For someone to have the foresight to get that done ( if I am not rambling and making wild assumptions ) is pretty cool.Maybe as competition to the T10 after seeing the spaces there?

Any knowledge on the dust-proofness of pantyhose? I have some that are 15 den - how much dust protection might one layer of this sort of thing give a driver, i.e. does it stop very small dust particles or the occasional hair that's aligned just right to potentially slip past the net?

I've been using pantyhose as default dust covers in my mods and it seems to do the trick. Stiff hairs will still find their way through, but that goes for any thin breathable material really.

Not very, unless you go really high end. Pretty much means a trip to Victoria's or La Senza the girls there will help a lot. You are probably better off with material (tricot)from panties (those you can get at the dollar store) When in doubt use the blow through test. Take a palmfull of dust or talcum powder and blow it through the material onto a piece of paper. See how much gets through and make your decision from there.

^ visions of someone walking into one of those stores, asking the girls for help, then holding their suggestion up to light, placing it on their ears, then after dousing it in talcum blowing through it onto some paper.

No matter how hard you explained it, you'd be explaining it again to security people lol

Are you guys seriously suggesting we go to a lingerie store and ask to blow through a girl's panties?...

One would assume you would test after the purchase. Another option is of course a swimsuit. They stretch miles and miles. An ex had one that was about the size of a facecloth until she squeezed it on. They get really thin so basically you can "stretch to tune"

And here I was waiting for the obligatory fishnet joke, and you both missed it.:)

The pantyhose seem to hold talcum when blown on lightly (don't want the powder to fly everywhere), but even the slightest of rubbing will push the powder right through.

The part of the pantyhose that would cover the most interesting areas is thicker on this model, and holds the talcum a bit better. Still not perfect, though.

In comparison, thick and tightly woven cotton cloth took a fair bit of rubbing for a tiny bit of talcum to seep through.

Has anyone attempted a mylar film for dust protection on an ortho?

haha it's bad enough doing that at the fabric store here ( not blowing through panties hahah )

I have some stuff that seems to work well it is called Sheer, like a black thin woven shiny black fabric. Seems acoustically transparent anyhow but not tried the dust thing yet on it.

I would think so long as it was very thin and hand rubbed for a few hours to introduce random crinkling ( like Stax does ) it might be fun to try, but who knows if it would make noise in any way, or if too tight would it "trap/create a resonance"?

Since you edited your post, let me rephrase my response as well.

Put felt into the cups. It flattens out the bass response. Instructions for this are throughout the thread, it's a staple mod.

Oh, and I see you're already selling them. I hope $95 wasn't what you paid, and if it was, you probably won't manage to get it back. Should perhaps mod them and see what they can do for you.

Yes i listed them for sale and trade, I don't really want to sell though i should change the post to trade only. I payed $50 for them and they are getting new pads this week so i figure if they do sell I'm just covering my initial price plus new pads and s&h. I'm more interested in trading for something equally as rare(i know they are not super rare but still vintage). That post from MDR30 is great news so maybe i can get some even cheaper pads and if i do the price or trade value will be dropped to. For now my t50rp has taken the place of my senn 380-pro for daily use and i had hoped the yh3 could be my new portable but its just not a good fit on my head. Thanks all for the replys. Might have to give the felt mod a go, i'm no stranger to building/repairing/modding it only took a min to get the cup open and the foam inside is vary old and broken down so now i'm sure it will help to be replaced.

I suspect it would act as a very poor passive radiator. Perhaps some of that plastic surgical tape might work. It is porous and the adhesive can be taken off with alcohol.

The Yamahas can be made ruler-flat in frequency response with very simple felt mods.

Works for electrostats at least. I made one for the Unipolar - it was acoustically transparent except for a peak in the treble.

Tried a mylar dust guard on the HOK.

A mylar disc (no idea how thick - it's from a roasting bag) attached to a blu-tack ring on the bottom end of the HOK baffle.

A felt ring on top, meant to create distance between the driver and mylar.

Baffle attached to the cup. The mylar can't really be seen, but it's there. The felt disc unintentionally slid a bit inwards towards the center of the driver - needs to be secured to the baffle.

Raw freq response. Black is with mylar, grey without. Noise in the bass frequencies is from elsewhere.

CSD plots. First one is without mylar, second is with.

Might try a crinkled mylar disc on the other driver. Seems the smooth disc does ok, but there's apparently something going on at 700 Hz.

I'm confused about this mylar... isn't that basically like making it closed on the back?
