Welcome to the next obsession after Grados and SennGrados
smily_headphones1.gif
. I have just started too...

My wife looked at the Fostex and said, "Jeez, Martyn, another headphone?"
"These are not like the others, honey. They're planars."

My wife thought they sounded 'dull' when stock. And I agree. She likes Muse, but Exogenesis from The Resistance just sounds flat.

I did explain to her that these are like 'studio monitors' and that they sound better when modified. At least, I hope so...

My wife checked out completely ion headphones when I started flooding the garage with sawdust making cups...

Give the Fostex a little modding time, you won't regret it. Done right (which takes some patience), and properly amped (I use a FiiO E12 on high gain) they can be as detailed as a Grado, without the harshness. When I first tried them, I just couldn't make it work....I then made a pair of wooden ones and I am sold. I am going to try a DBV 3 pair without wooden cups next.

I can't do the wood versions - I don't have a woodwork shop. I'll probably stick to the model clay and felt modifications.

They actually scale a bit too, not a ton but there's a good difference between my fiio x3 and running balanced on my audio gd.

T50RP pairing great the Cayin C5. Volume at 4-5 more than enough...does circa 1 watt total on that impedance.
Adds no treble etch to the signature and has a slightly tubey sound to the portable amp....wider sound-staging/instrument separation as well. Great for entry-level pricing.

Continued from post #10948... One week later...

I added a simple leather strap using hair elastics. I like the ability to get a perfect fit against my head.

I opened them up again:
+ sticky back thin felt to line the sides of the cups
+ 42mm square of stiff felt, with four 3mm holes, over the dime sized treble reflector
+ changed the damping material to six cotton balls
+ cut a 42mm diamond out of the foam of the 840 pads. Used scrapbooking tape to secure to the ear-side felt. Made the mistake of covering the baffle port, so I removed the tape over that area
+ inserted 1/4" shock cord under the 840 foam pads. This added volume to the pads, slightly more bass but after an hour it was uncomfortable, so I removed the shock cord.

These changes resulted in a much brighter sound, with clear bass and mids, running without any EQ on my iPod/M8 player. I use the middle impedance setting, and highest gain when playing at 50% volume. To listen at 25% volume, I use some bass and treble boost on the EQ switches.

I have a hifiman shell en route. Need to make some baffles, then see what these sound like full open. If they don't sound right, we'll I'll try and source some he6 drivers!
