Where did you get the shells?

A fellow head-fiier had the cups and had a headband gimbal setup coming from hifiman(odd they told me No!). Anyhow he pmd me with the offer, and although I don't see me having time soon, I couldn't refuse as this is exactly what I wanted for an open t50. And now I'll have extra cups to tryout wood cups for the t50 and my he4. Just don't k now as I actually like the he4 paint.

Very awesome. Can't wait to see what you come up with. I've been thinking about how open T50rps would work, I was thinking dense felt instead of mesh for the open backs. Something to keep open, but damp it enough.

Good idea, any other ideas from you more creative folks let me know! I'm not very creative coming up with ideas for mods

Are there any significant changes to quality of headband on t20rp mk2 and t50rp ? I mean when I want to 3D print the driver frame and cups myself...so maybe there is no point getting t50rp...

I never tried any t50;) only t20s, seems like driver are same, only paper on the back of driver might be vary. So dont see point of buying t50 if you want only drivers

They're identical.

Although the Fostex website shows different frequency ranges for the T50RP, T40RPmk2 and T20RPmk2, are there any differences in the drivers? I remember reading that Smeggy said no, but that was a while ago.

Apologies if this was covered ad nauseam with no change.

Only Fostex knows for sure, But....

I think there's no difference. Parts are interchangeable across all 3 sets. They look identical under close inspection, including the diaphragms and magnets...I've taken them apart many times and looked at them under magnificaiton.

There is definitely manufacturing variance Within and Between models:
> rear damping porosity
> rear damping glue --> some are not fully glued down on corners;  glue partially seals / blocks a grid space
> rear damping tension
> diaphragm tension within the frame
> diaphragm "wrinkles" --> cause 'fluttering' or "buzzing." I recently replaced one that was badly wrinkled. No more buzz.

There may be differences in magnetic flux from one run to the next...speculation.

Early on I wondered why I had trouble duplicating the tuning configuration on subsequent new sets of T50RP. When I discovered the "porosity factor," it became clear. Pictures of different rear damping paper can be found in FIMM. When I discovered the wrinkled diaphragm, case closed. I will post pictures of the wrinkled driver in FIMM, in the same section as the rear damping paper.

Are there some specific mods that increase sound isolation AND comfort (anti sticky sweat)? I was surprised they don't offer much sound isolation with no mods, despite their close nature.

Tune them with the vents completely covered and try some different pads. Shure alcantara are a great candidate for that problem.

For isolation you can use deadening materials like latex foam ('memory foam' mod) or fiberglass inside the cups, then put some paxmate or something similar on the ear side of the baffle around the driver opening, this will increase the isolation. Thicker pads also help.

I can't hear a single outside noise out of mine, and they're very very comfy!
