Grado modders go Magnum

Anyone here tried punching holes on the magnum v4 drivers?

I really wouldn't.

Magnums are really kinda fine tweaked, I don't think they are meant to be punched.. And you might have a hard time ever recovering them.. What makes you wanna punch the holes? Want more bass? Get a sealed on ears or in ear monitor.

Let the magnums be IMOO

I just finished my first ever Magnum build just over a week ago, and I'm really happy with the results! Ordered the "Turbulent X" drivers from Turbulent Labs, but I thought their cups were too expensive and I ended up finding a better deal on eBay. I was really happy with the cups, so I thanked the seller and asked him whether he makes them. Turns out, they were made by a head-fier named 7keys, and he sells the cups for him. Whoever 7keys is, thank you!

I also modded my old SR225 set - gave it a single detachable chord, and threaded a fairly thick Canare L-4E6S cable through the headband and into the other cup. Needed to create extra holes in the cups for the wire, but it worked out beautifully and I really love the set. Most single chord mods I have seen for Grados create new holes in the top of the cup, which prevents it from swiveling properly inside the gimbals. I created a hole in the side, so that the wire leaves the cup right next to the spot where the gimbals hold the cup, but on the inside - between the gimbal and the pad. Since the hole I created is right next to the swivel point, the wire is not in the way of the gimbal and the cup is able to swivel completely normally - the wire just comes out of the back of the cup and goes up into the headband.

This is my first ever post so it's not letting me put up pictures. As soon as the mods approve, I will upload some pics for you guys!

It's taking a while for the mods to allow me to upload pictures, so I created a flickr.

Here are the Magnums:

And here is the SR225 Mod. I'm proud of this mod, but I decided to give this set away to a lucky friend for Christmas.

i got new cups and listened to them and compared them to my modded sr60i which i gave to my girlfriend..i was surprised that i liked the bass on the sr60 more on some songs so i thought about punching holes on my magnum v4 drivers..hours after that i took the new cups out and used the old wooden cups and compared it again with my modded sr60i..the bass is back! :D the new cups was the problem..need to do some mods on the new cups.. thanks for the advice!

I have been working with a shop to get aluminum sleeves done. Haven't heard from them because I told them not to hurry.

I will follow up with them after Christmas.

Hey! Nice to see someone stop by. Mind you that I have aluminum cups but yes...a massive difference. My Magnums are more enjoyable than all of the Grado line including the PS1000.

wow!  Are you F'ng kidding me?

This is a big decision for me. I have ordered wood cups but not yer liberated my existing drivers so now may be the time but I'm trying to justify if it is really worth it....
