Spent yesterday morning in a machine shop cleaning up the saw marks on the sides of the gimbal rings. I turned down the width to between .200 and .225 to make them narrower.  They will pivot more and I believe allow a better fit.  For custom wood cups I can make special gimbals that are less then .200 if needed, just let me know.  The visible face of the ring is now being dressed with sand paper while spinning on the lathe to give an even brushed aluminum finish.  Hope to cut, drill and tap a pair to send out for a review early this week.

Here is a photo of the version 2 ring.

Need info, I have been looking at buying a set of drivers and not sure what drivers to go with.  The Turbulent X drivers are discontinued but the Symphones v7 can be purchased at Symphones.com.  Not sure what the difference between the Turbulent X and the Symphones v7 are and wanted some info and or advise on the drivers. I have even been watching a set of Ypsilon Drivers on eBay and was curious what experience any one could share about theses.

I hope to build a pair of head phones from the ground up and need to pick the drivers first.

Any help is appreciated...

Things are finally coming together for my new build! As I mentioned a couple posts back, I ordered some aluminum gimbals from @retox  on ebay. Another user expressed his issues with gimbals of this style and similar ones such as the ones available on www.rholupat.com citing the fact that they are too wide and thus restrict movement of the cups, which causes poor fit when wearing the headphones.

Today, I took receipt of the V2 aluminum gimbals by @retox which have been reworked to be thinner for a better fit and refinished for a cleaner look. I will compare V1 and V2 of his gimbals below.

Since my headband assembly arrived, I finally could put my new Nhoord build together.

For a couple days now I've had the V1 gimbals installed. I expected that I would have problems with comfort and fit due to the width of the gimbals. The truth is, I actually did not notice any problem in these areas. I think it is possible that head shape is a factor and that some people may have more problems than others, but to me, the fit was fine. The cups fit flush against my ears. I think that the lack of movement did cause the clamp to be a touch tighter on the upper half of the cups, but it wasn't really noticeable at all until I installed the V2 gimbals and tried to think about how they feel different.

Here are a couple pictures of the V1 gimbals:

So, to recap my previous post, I felt like it was necessary to use a green Scotch-Brite pad to even out the finish of the V1 gimbals. The result of my effort can be seen in the pictures above (I don't have any before pics). This took a good 30 minutes total to do on both gimbals. They look quite good IMO. The finish really did need a bit of work to do justice to the fine work of the custom cups made by @fleasbaby

So, since the fit of the V1 gimbals was good enough, what do the V2 gimbals really offer? Well, I can tell you that the finish on the V2 gimbals was much, much better than the state of the finish when I got the V1. It was very obvious that more effort was put into making the V2 look nice. And they do look nice indeed. Further, the V2 is noticeably thinner than the V1, meaning that I now have some wiggle room with the cups! Because of the added play in the cups, the drivers now actually sit a bit better, more even with my ears than they did before. I guess I didn't really realize what I was missing out on fit-wise until I installed the V2 gimbals. To be clear, I could live happily with the V1, but the V2 is definitely a better design. You can see from the picture below that even just sitting on the headphone stand, the cups are now resting at a different angle than before.

See V2 pictures below:

V1 in my hand, V2 installed:

So, there you go! These gimbals are great, reasonably priced, and they ship quickly from the USA. They get my full recommendation.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm using the vinyl caps that came on my stock gimbals because they are about half the length of the ones that come with these aftermarket gimbals. Just an aesthetic preference.

Glad you're enjoying those cups :)

Want to report a little on my Magnum v4 build.  I have had them for a while, I am finding that I am gravitating more and more the last few weeks, listening to them more than the HD600 or the HE500.

One thing kept bugging me though, and that is a pretty noticeable channel imbalance.  The left channel is quite a bit lighter than the right channel.  After checking out the assembly for a while, it was clear that the headband is the issue (a cheap headband I got for free), so I switched to another cheap headband, which I took from a $5 headphone.  The problem is that with the new headband, the sound is distant, the bass has gone AWOL, and the who sound became tinny, and I finally realized that the headband has a much larger impact on sound that I would give it credit for.

The issue is that the new headband didn't have enough clamp, and as a result, the cups were not pressed against my ears hard enough.  I switched back to the old headband, and the good sounds came back.  I also adjusted the assembly and now the channel imbalance is gone.

Given the availability of these reasonably priced aluminum gimbals, I am tempted to find a headband assembly and make my build even MORE aluminum than before.

The Sony 7506 headband can be purchased through Trew Audio for $19.99 + shipping.  IMO, it is one of the better headbands that one can buy out there for a D.I.Y. build.  Sure, it's not as cheap as a $5.00 band, but you really get a great headband that has been utilized by Sony for many years on one of their main studio monitor headphones.  Great comfort too!

If this has been covered/mentioned by another thread & I missed it, obvs ignore (or please link to). Also, (ignore) the disjointed syntax (early labor day start wake & bake). There are clearly some, on the various grado/magnum/nhoord/ypsilon forums thread [look, one big happy fam] who prefer sorbothane to dynamat or other damping materials for the center driver back. typically, my understanding is you get a sheet of the stuff & cut it down to fit whatever needs you have. my question is there any reason why something precut like these wouldn't work?

There are flattop, doughnut [center missing] & hemispherical variants at least. Assuming the diameter fits inside the radius of the driver back center, which would be the most effective? if you could articulate why as well, would be much appreciated

Hi everybody. Got a pair of questions :

1) Do you know where one can get affordablelow-profile wooden cups? I find RS1 and even RS2 cups a bit long in profile.

2) Is there any way to get black gimbals (even stock Grado ones would do the job), since I find aluminium far too shiny.

Thanks.

1) You might want to specify on the affordable part. To me, anything under $100 is extremely reasonable for a specialty item like handmade cups. If you want a special design, you might want to ask someone who makes cups, such as @fleasbaby, if they can accommodate your request.

2) I have a spare set of black stock gimbals. I'll pm you :)
