Out of curiosity, are active noise cancelling headphones effective at the drilling and hammering that comes inside the building? I've heard they're not as good at noises that aren't as constant as the hum of jet engines.

IIRC noise cancelling headphones aren't much good for inconsistent noises. Although I lost my HF5 on a flight a few weeks ago, they have AMAZING isolation. The foamies were able to bring the noise of the airplane's engines to absolutely nothing.

Thanks again for your reply. I was under the impression that the beyerdynamic's were more bass orientated? From your reply though, its sounds like I was mislead.

Soundstage is one thing to me but the sound reproduction is more important to me. I'm certainly perplexed. Is the frequency spectrum something to go on as I've noticed the beyer's have the broadest? There are no headphone specialists here in Ireland so its kind of difficult to judge which would be for me. I guess I'll research a little more. Then take the plunge! Thanks.

Well, The DT770 do have a slight bass orientation, but they become more flat after some break-in time. Unfortunately, that time is quite long (Sometime around 300+ hours break-in). I find that soundstage greatly helps with more natural-sounding audio. That doesn't mean that headphones that have little soundstage sound bad, but just different.

As for frequency response; yes, having a broader spectrum is generally better, but it doesn't necessarily reflect the headphones too much. Some headphones may have larger ranges, but can sound inferior to other headphones with a smaller spectrum.

Here are a few I'm looking at, need help deciding.
Mostly just for at-home listening purposes though ideally portable enough. I listen mainly to rock, alternative, indie, some folky stuff, with occasional electronica, so I guess I'm looking for rock/indie-leaning all-around headphones.

ATH-M50
Cons: headband/generally on the bulky side aesthetically

ATH-W55
Cons: Not sure about the sound quality relative to the higher-marked on this list

Sennheiser HD25-1 II
Cons: High on my price range

Sennheiser 598s, 558
Cons: Iffy on the color of the sennheiser 598

V-Moda Crossfades M-100
Cons: Possibly not enough accuracy that's sacrificed for bass

Any other suggestions are also welcome.

The Shure SRH-440 or Sennheiser HD280 Pro should probably do you some justice.

The HD 25 would indeed be portable and is a very good rock headphone. The DT1350 is my prefered on ear and can be found as low as $209 open box, but prolly out of your price range.

Look into the KRK KNS8400 as an over ear that could be used portably if you want, Very good for rock music, removable cable so you can use a shorter cable for portable use and a longer one at home. Highly underrated headphone IMO.

Hey all, this was my post from a few pages back:
----

I'm a singer, and will be recording stuff here soon, and I'd like to know what's considered a decent pair for recording? The only full-sized headphones I ever owned were the old Bose Tri-Ports, which I think are rebranded as the AE2's now. All I heard about was how overrated Bose was, and now it seems the Beats brand has overtaken them as most overpriced/overrated headphones.

I was pretty close to snatching up a pair of Beats Studio (just because I tried them in best buy and liked them, but I'm sure there's other brands out there that cost less with better quality).

I've heard about Sennheiser, Shure, etc. being decent brands to start off with.

But I'm not an audiophile (although I have tons of FLAC music files and converted them to 320 mp3s for my mp3 player), so I have no idea where to even begin!

If possible, I'd like it if the pair I bought was also good for listening to music as well not just recording it. I listen to all sorts of music, rap/hip hop, r&b, pop, rock, 80's, 70's, 60's, 50's, rat pack, classical, etc. If I have to buy one pair just for listening on the side and one pair for recording, I'd consider it, but I'd hope there was a really good all-around headphone pair already out there for both.

-----

So far, Roller suggested I look into Shure SRH840 and Ultrasone Pro 550, because I'm looking for full-sized around the ear (circumaural?).

I'd like to get a few more suggestions if possible. I'm trying to buy a set in the next week and a half, already ordered my microphone set.

As I said before, if I have to get two different headphones (one pair just for listening, and another just for my recording sessions) I would do that. I'd love to get one that had the best mix for both uses, but if there are two that standout and are each individually priced at a decent cost, I don't mind getting them separate.

Thanks

Hello everyone. I am looking to buy a new closed back headphones. I am thinking of DENON AHD600 or VMODA M100. I also  own BAYERDYNAMIC DT770 pro 80ohm headphones. Can anyone explain if Denon or vmoda are better than 770pro and if so in which areas?

I am really not a basshead but i do love good bass which is punchy and accurate. Bayerdynamic dt770pro has good bass but it doesnt feel very accurate or clear, it rather feels a bit muddy. So basically will denon or vmoda be a good upgrade from dt770pro? Please compare these 3 headphoneas and suggest which one is better among the 3.

Thank you

Thanks to both for the input, I'll check out the others you guys suggested. :)

I'm looking for headphones for hip hop that have heavy bass but not overpowering. I can spend up to 120 and would like something that I can listen to on my iPod at home and mobile when I'm outside the house, so no 10 ft long cords or overly bulky designs. Thanks for any help.

Hey guys!

So I'm in the market for a nice pair of headphones.  I listen to all types of music.  From dubstep and house, to radiohead and alt rock.  I'm basically looking for a pair that fit a few criteria:  Closed headphone with awesome bass, that is also comfortable.  I would be able to spend no more then $300.  I'm coming off of some old Bose Triport's (i know, i know), but they were quite light and comfy.

I've had a look over the Headphone Buying guide here, and am currently looking at the following: Audio Technica ATG-Pro700MK2, Ultrasone Pro 900, and even the IEM Monster Turbine Pro Gold.

I would also be using these for travel to and from work, so any that don't require an amp would be best.
Can anyone shed some more light on those three?  Thanks!

Hello, I'm looking for good, audiophile around-the-ear headphones that cost no more than $150. Right now, I'm looking at AKG K240, Audio Technica ATH-M50, and Sennheiser HD 518. Out of these three, which do you think is the best choice? Is there anything better? Thanks for the help.

Also, if it helps, I listen to pretty much everything but mainly black metal and dark ambient.

Bumping from a few pages back since I haven't gotten an answer.

The HD518 & K240s are open headphones and the ATH-M50s are closed headphones.
So open or closed are both fine?
Save a few dollars and get the Takstar Pro 80 (Gemini HSR-1000) closed headphones, usually sell for around $88.
Here is a thread on them.

Datavision currently sells them for $83.56, shipped.
