Well I'm not sure about it's driving capabilities, but I've read of people reporting that it moved the HifiMan HE-500 rather well.
On the sound signature, I thought the ATH-M50 sounded a little harsh on my cowon A3, voices sounded metallic and unnatural. But with the Ibasso I think it has improved, or I just got used to it. I guess what I want is a well balaneced sound with sweet highs and organic feeling mids, and I do love to hear great bass textures. Like I said, I listen to a wide variety of music genres.
I'm looking for an open pair.

you'll probably want to get an orthodynamic headphone like the he-400 if you want good mids and organic sound.

So you're not willing to pay 50$ for an amp but you'd rather spend 200-300$ on recabling? Recabling has no impact on durability, it's almost a placebo that you get better sound recabling.

I've seen a few different 600 OHm versions of the dt 990 and they either have neither Pro nor Preimum or preimum, anyways I'm happy to hear the pro 990 are like the Pro 900 [which I shall never own I've seen it's roll offs dreadfull!]
 
I will say the pro 990 250 has better sub and low mid bass[ 30-130 (+8db peak} at 130) ] , where as the 600 ohm has better mid and upper mid bass [140-300hz  (+8 peak at 200) ] the 600 ohm also extends better but peaks in high frz, 
 
Point being I think the 250's are the better option seeing as the 600 ohm is almost twice as much! But hey I might get a 600 Ohm version when I go for a Hifiman He-500!

I'm looking for a headphone within the $250-$400 range to use with an HT Claro Halo for mostly music use, but also a small amount of gaming. I'm looking to upgrade from my Senn HD 280s. I listen to mainly rock (progressive, indie, alternative), instrumental, ambient (see my last.fm for a better idea). I want an immersive listening experience with a decent soundstage, relatively neutral. I apologize if I'm not being descriptive enough, I'm relatively new at audiophilia.

So I'm currently looking to upgrade to some new headphones. I currently have the K701, RS2i and the dt1350 along with a Musical Fidelity M1dac and a wa6se.  I'm looking to upgrade the K701 after discovering I prefer the sound of the dt1350, I just wish they were more comfortable for long listening sessions.
 
Is there an amalgamation of the dt1350 and K701? Is there a headphone that comes close to keeping the bass and mids of the 1350 and the openness and treble of the K701 while toning the harshness down a little. Most important would be the lush mids, bass, openness and then treble. They also have to be more comfortable than the dt1350 for long listening session.
 
Without hearing them I was considering the a ATH-W1000X, SRH 1840, He-500, LCD-2, HD 700 but I'm open to any others that may fit. 1K is about the max I can afford.

Looking for a pair of closed headphones.
I have been thinking of buying a used pair of Denon ah-d5000 or a new pair of mrSpeakers (modded fostex t50rp).
 
I wanted to find out what some other people might decide between these two headphones.
Keeping in mind that the Denon headphones in question are discontinued, so prices are on the rise.
 
It would be a bonus to have my closed pair of headphones complement the HE-400 and LCD2 at home.

My first choice given what you are seeking would be the Beyer DT 880. 
 
The HD 650 is also very good.
 
I have only heard the HE-500, which one of my favorite cans.  I have read from more than one reviewer than the HE-400, while quite good, is a bit dark.  If true you won't be getting the highs that you seek.

Are you OK with open cans--they leak sound?
