Surprised no one mentioned Rotel RCD-855. Cheap (should be around $100) and sounds great. Very smooth, musical, analog playback. Not the last word in transparency or detail, but musicality is great.

I use Onix Ref 1 and I have the Sennheiser HD580 headphones. I feel they are comparable. The Onix has cleaner lower mids and midbass that you are talking about. Look at the Onix Ref 3 and Onix Strata Mini as well. I also had PSB Stratus Mini and these were similar to the Sennheiser sound, but...

I would suggest Onix XLS, for nearfield use, since you have a receiver already. They are better sounding than the Swan M200 I think (used to own swans years ago) and cost less too.

If I wiggle the cable sometimes the sound cuts out..I think the connection is shorting where I soldered it. The signal wires are bumping against the side of the RCA plug (ground). I thought I did a good job soldering it though...it looks exactly like the pictures in the step by step instructions...

I don't know if it helps but I used to own the Aric 1.5 tube pre, and I was not too impressed with it. The build quality was poor and the sound was compressed and lacked air and the bass was weak too. It did have a hint of tube warmth but the sound was just compressed and the soundstage so small...

Some reviews of active speakers. Quad 11L/12L is also available in active I use Onix XLS for PC use, I think would be great for a dorm room. A Peachtree Decco integrated with USB would go well with these I think.
