555s are supposed to be efficient enough that you wouldn't need an amp.  Unless you've used an amp before while noticing a substantial improvement, then don't bother.  If the headphones sound quiet, then you should perhaps consider an amp or simply turn up your volume.

Also, probably, bass response.  Games are generally better with such a visceral punch, but it's not essential.

AD700.  I don't own them, but I am coveting them so much right now.  Note that these are the open ones--the closed A700s will sound boxy and constricted, with a duller sound.  You could indeed go PortaPro or PX100, but they both have considerable bass humps.  Additionally, the PX100s don't stand...
