IMO it sounds just fine without an amp. I got a portable amp to use with my SE530's, but since I moved to TripleFi's, I no longer use the amp. In fact I think it sounds better without the amp! Particularly if you have a good source.

The 2nd gen touch was said to have better sound quality than even the Sansa Clip. I used one of these and can say that it had great sound quality. The 3rd gen touch is said to have improved on the 2nd gen touch sound, so go for it!

Might want to check out the Sansa Clip. Available in various capacities 8gb and under I think. Should be within you price range, known for good sound quality, and only does music, has a simple screen.
