I absolutely LOVE my K601 for rock, jazz and classical. It has enough deep, pleasant bass while still remaining the sparkling, beautiful highs the K*01 series are known for, plus, it's about half of your budget new.

I like the Maverick Audio D1 for it's versatility, many inputs, and tube preamp. All that, and it sounds good too.

When they say 'because you're looking' they mean, of course, the added visual aspect produces inevitable placebo. If you can see what you're plugging in, you have expectations. This is why DBT is the only way to truly evaluate such things in audio.

I suppose the next biggest upgrade you could go with would be a dedicated DAC. Going from onboard sound to a dedicated DAC was pure magic for me. No longer did I have to listen to my music with such an annoying hiss.
