Thinking of selling my ad700s now and my audio-gs compass to help fund s full new setup. I will have around $1000 to spend and would be used on my computer for gaming, music (pop, rock, classical, opera) and movies. So I would need a DAC, and amp and new cans. Any reccomendations? I'm guessing a balanced setup?

Albeit I had the 250 ohm version, I decided to return my DT880 because there was a lack of transparency and sparkle that I wanted. Overall just really congested, but they really did have great detail and the timbre was marvelous. The AD2000 (which I heard briefly at a local meet) is similar to the SA5000 (also heard briefly) in the fact that they're quick, detailed, and engaging, however warmer and with a smaller sound stage. I would heavily consider the SA5k if you're looking for incredible detail and resolution, even though they're very cold sounding.

The AD2k compared to the SA5k:

My two cents.

Yes..sa5k is a cold sounding can alright. It's worthwhile to read up ahead before buyin' it however. It gets quite a debate around here let alone the segregating nature it has.

I like my headphones (otherwise I wouldnt have them) so I will recommend them. Used RS1is can be found for around ~450, the Denon AH-D5000 can be found for around $400 (which can be modded using the MarkL Mod), and the HD600/HD650 are a great value and can be found for ~$300. The RS1i does the best with limited amping. The others will require a decent amp to reach their full potential.

If you can find a place to audition some headphones, I would really recommend that.

sadly where I live I know of no place that sells "good" headphones so no chance to try out and I was looking at getting a pair of d5000 but I have heard they hae bad build quality and break easy.

I own the HD 600, AKG K701 and DT990 (600 ohm) and I must say that most of the time, I use the DT 990. Being 600 ohm, they require good amplification but they are very rewarding and fun with plenty of bass. For me the AKG 701 are my "serious" cans for "serious" listening (

) and the DT990 are my "fun" cans. And since I like having fun, I'm a DT990 fan !

Beyer 600 ohm drivers are very sensitive and easily driven for 600 ohm drivers, and the Compass will certainly drive them to audible levels, however to get the most out of them you will need either a higher end SS amp (Audio-GD C2 supposedly drives them very well, mine has yet to arrive so can't say for sure), or a tube amp (Little Dot amps will drive them great).

I strongly recommend seeking out a used Stax rig. A pair of Lambdas and an SRM1/MK2 amp can be found for $400-$500 if you're patient. The combo, in my opinion, is significantly better than most dynamic rigs that are even 2-3x the price.

They quality is very good, though the Lambdas are indeed plastic. Sometimes simpler is better. They last forever (hence the thriving used market) and parts can easily be replaced.

I absolutely LOVE my K601 for rock, jazz and classical. It has enough deep, pleasant bass while still remaining the sparkling, beautiful highs the K*01 series are known for, plus, it's about half of your budget new.

Consider a pair of ultrasone Pro900's as once Kees modded or even stock will surprise you with the amount of detail they can produce. They can be found used for around the $400 mark although they do need a little bit of amping to sound their best.

I'm thinking of selling my current setup and buying a balanced setup with a budget of around $1k ( would use for movies games and music (pop, rock, classical) reccomendations? I'm thinking some balanced k701s or 650s unless someone has some other reccomendations and I have no clue for amp and dac
