Hi guys,

I'm looking to upgrade from some DT770's to a flatter and more open headphone. I love the comfort of beyers so I want to stay withing their lineup. What are some of the biggest differences between the sound signatures of both these versions?

dt880 more smoother, cleaner, & everything becomes more detailed and balanced.

since you're coming from the 770 series, you'll either love them or find them to be too analytical.

It all boils down to your music tastes i guess. the 990 would be a true upgrade & you'll be getting the best of both worlds with a super sexy bass response system

if price is an important factor the 990s are on sale right now, I however just ordered the 600ohm dt880 earlier today. Ive been going back in forth on it forawhile and just tried to think long and hard as i dont want to keep flipping headphones, but only the ears will tell in the end i suppose.

Try to listen to both. I had the chance and preferred the Premium. They sounded better balanced to my ears.

I thought about the 990's but i've heard the highs are a bit overpowering on them, and i'm much more sensitive to highs than lows. I think I would enjoy a very analytical balanced sound, I listen to alot of trance, and while I love the bass impact on the 770s i wish they had more mids to warm up female vocals.

Headdie- whats the big difference as far as comfort between the pro and premium product line? The 770's I have are 80 ohm pros, so are you saying that the premiums will fit differently since they're in a different line?

The only difference between Pro and Premium is that the Pro are different comfort-wise. They clamp harder.

Which has its consequences for the sound. By clamping harder, they should give a bit more bass.

Did you find the treble 'shrill' or that they were overly bright? I read that comment about the 880-250ohms recently on the forum.

Comfort is #1 if you want to forget your phones and focus on the music. Clamping harder, I guess the Pro line is better for smaller heads (or musicians who move a lot while listening).

Try before buying if you can. I prefer the DT990 over the DT880, I prefer the Pro over the Premium, and I spend more time with my DT990-250 than with my DT990-600... Probably enough to be excommunicated from Headfi... So it might be a good idea for you to try them before buying and make your own opinion !

Where is a good place to try out both headphones? Most stores I know of that carry beyers usually only have the 770s

The 880 Pro got a stellar review in last month's Sound on Sound magazine as one of the most balanced headphones for studio use. There were 3 or 4 reviewers and they also rated the k701 and the hd650 very highly. I think the hd650 came out on top actually, which was surprising to me after reading how many head-fi'ers find it too dark with too much lows. But ,at least one of the reviewers thought the 880 Pro was about as good as it gets for a studio headphone....for what it's worth. Unfortunately they didn't try the Premium version.

I believe the 880/600 MANUFAKTUR beats all other 880 models for build and sound quality. I think I have heard them all.

I believe every 880 as a slight etch in the highs, at least compared to electrostatics. Nonetheless with the right amp, 880/600 beats K701 and HD600 on nearly every kind of music IMO. Smoother freq resp, sharper transients. Can't comment on the HD650. At the NJ micro meet, many thought the HD800s easily beat the 880/600s, losing only to the top-end 'stats. I didn't get enough time on the HD800's to form any conclusion.
