I am curious to see what some of you guys bought as your first real headphones and what you bought after those and what you have now.
I just want to see how you guys go so into this hobby that you are willing to spend so much!

Koss Portapro was my very first "decent" headphones.  Then later I got into the whole IEM craze and got the IM716 and used them for several years until I lost them *or someone stole them* then I got the NE-7m for their replacement.

I think the RE0 are what pushed me over to start getting somewhat serious into this hobby.  But, it's getting expensive.  I might have to start selling my chainmail to supplement my audio addiction!

In cronological order

PX200 - Amazed me as my first non stock headphones

PX100 - Loved the bass against the 200

HD595 - These were my first real full size love, to date I still have a good opinion of them

K701 - Found them cheap and thought they were amazing value, unfortunately I didn't like them so sold
them shortly after

AD700 - They were mentioned as great for gaming, didn't like them due to no bass so gave them to a friend.

HD650 - Loved the overall improvement over the 595, but after a while I realized that I preferred the frequency response of the 595, but they are still in my collection for bright or compressed music and podcasts/youtube

HD800 - My reference, I love them and they will be my main headphone for the foreseeable future

PX200-II - Needed something closed and compact for traveling, and like them better than the PX100

DT48S - These are a 50's headphone, wanted to try a vintage headphone, and they were regarded as being something different than modern headphones like the K1K or HD800. Love them and probably I'll get another DT48 in the future since it is cheap.

Damnnnnn. Quite a collection. What didn't you like about the K701? I know they say the soundstage is unrealistically wide, but what else?
Also quite a jump from the AD700 to HD650 to HD800!

In chronological order:

*NOTE: Bolded headphones mean they are gone*

V-Moda Bass Freq (Left channel died after a year. First introduction to headphones)

Koss PortaPro (1st stepped on and snapped. On my 2nd pair. Using PX200 pads)

Altec Lansing 326 (Does NOT fit, cloth cable beyond irritating, never use them)

Audio Technica AD700 (My reference set for now. Comfort is still king)

Philips 9850 (Excellent in-ears that I still use today. Cable too much memory)

Sony XB300 (Wanted to hear crazy bass. Pads hurt ears after 1/2hr)

Sony XB500 (Needed circumaural instead of earpad. Insane bass)

AKG K701 (Had them for a week unamped. Same SQ as my AD700)

? Ultrasone ? (Next reference headphone I will be using without an amp)

Just out of curiosity, have you seen the show Hoarders? *giggle*
Wow, some people collect shot glasses, others postcards, but you sir are a headphone collector.

About the 701, they have little body, or in other words they lack mid bass (and my pair had already more than a thousand hours). Also the soundstage is wide, but it was kind of like a wall of sound, a fixed depth for everything. But more importantly, the mids sounded weird to me, made things kind of unrealistic, so thats why I preferred even the 595, all of this obviously IMO.

nikongod, a little off topic but may I ask out of all the phones you've had or have, does any one pr. stand out as your favorite? Better yet did or do any of them reproduce most of what we're all trying' to find, (musical bliss)? This Inquiring mind wants to know, from what seems to be the "KING OF CANS"! Thanks

My collection pales in comparison to others who dont post so much anymore.

Anyways, the HD800 gets the most listening-time of any of my headphones. kind of weird. I was a "grado guy" for ages but have pretty much moved on.

In some ways I prefer the R10, but Im always afraid to damage them. I also find that they require me to "burn myself in" a little to the sound to truly appreciate. I seldom listen to 1 thing for a couple weeks straight, which is how I find the R10 to sound best.

Probably the most significant thing I have done to my system in ages has been to figure out how to EQ for my own ears.
This thread and the guides in it make a HUGE improvement (IMO, YMMV, etc, etc) in my system's overall sound quality to me.

My First decent headphones were the Senn HD202. After that I have got the IEM craze and I brought SoundMagic PL11, then PL 30 and the Meelec M9. I am currently using the M9's for music with my sansa clip+ and HD202 for movies in my laptop.

I have ordered for a pair of Brainwavz M1 last week and now I am waiting for it to arrive.
