Top 5 Closed Back Cans

Go for it! They go for around $150 to 160-ish these days. I really would like to get an opinion from a more "educated" set of ears.

Ah Head-Fi; even when you're just offering an opinion or giving someone else buying advice, you end up with a shopping cart full of new items that you never knew you needed until just that moment....

I'm glad I could help keep your wallet thin! One of the only negative things I hear from folks on the M50 is that the clamping force is a little tight. I've never had this problem, but I thought I might just alert you.

Sony MDR-R10
Stax 4070
L3000
for sure... (not that I've heard them, but they are the most regarded closed hp)

the last two spots are open for debate, probably from the list D7K, W3KANV, DXK, W5K, and more.

Just realized that other than the STAX.. all top-tier closed cans are woodies...

I feel like I'm going crazy. My denons don't leak at all unless you're listening at pretty loud volumes. Am I the only one?

I think that it depends on the fit and clamp. The pleather pads are efficient at isolation. The problem is that the denon has always been one to just kind of float on your head with a loose clamp. At least that was how my d2k was. Then I got the d5k and there is more clamp and therefore more isolation. It's actually a win win for me. Better isolation and doesn't move around if I lean to far forward.

its true, the higher ones do clamp better, but i think the floating is more comfortable. And the D2k pads are softer, I think they extra stuffed the D7k pads.

But you do get better Isolation

Is there any difference between any of the pads between the Denon  line?

With mine the D2k pads are notably softer, but it could be because they are over a year old.... wow.... just realized that.

I think Markl said no the last time this came up, but from the recent Tyll review (of the 2012 "redux") they have some minor mechanical differences (Between the woodies and the D2ks). The other thing I do remember from the various modding threads is that the consistency between any two sets is fairly low (for this price range) - it's not like the HD 600 where you'd swear there's a single machine that just stamps a complete HD 600 out of some block of who knows what, and then goes on to make another. Having pads that aren't the exact same size/weight, same density, or other minor differences (like how well the adjustors work or how easily they spin side to side) is not unheard of.

erm we kinda forgot the JVC HP-DX1000

Glad someone finally mentioned this.  I was reading thru the thread waiting for it.....took long, one of the best closed.  I alternate between the DX1000 and the Ed 8 LE.  Currently the DX1000 is in rotation as my wife watches tv on the other side of the room.  What is she watching, i have no idea, i can't hear it, cranking a Phish cover of La Grange(ZZtop) which i haven't heard in years.
