Are you on Windows 10? I've never touched it but I've read in the forums that legacy USB may need to be activated. Please don't ask me how, just an idea.

On a more serious note : have you tried a different cable? Have you tried connecting the device to another computer? Let's get this thing to function properly together.

Following up here. The sibilence issue was due to this fact everyone said before but now I can confirm:

FiiO X5 is unforgiving to bad recordings and will basically tell you "what you play is what you get".

Low treble music also sounded a bit numb and being understanding enough to see that not every track should sound awesome at full volume is a step up in enjoying quality gear (sorry hardcore audiophiles if X5 is not considered "quality gear").

Simply turn down the volume and, well, blame the track. Forgiving good gear on crappy tracks and not running to the eq or any patch-it-up gear/amps allows for greater enjoyment of good tracks.

I got the HD600 yesterday and it sounds very accurate and pleasing, It suits all genres and while it won't nearly fulfill its potential on the X5, it does sound decent. It sounds kinda like - whatever you expect from them, that's not what you'll get. But a pleasant surprise it is.

Will probably get e12 or something someday but happy for now.

I'm glad you're enjoying your new setup. The HD600 is an AWESOME headphone, and sounds pretty damn good on the X5, but will grow even better with an amp.

Congratulations on a wonderful purchase. I know you'll love them for a long time to come.

I don't know how fiio handles this kind of situation but I think you'll have to ship your x5 to get the screen changed. Try contacting them and ask them what options are available for you.

I think so. I've replaced the screen on my samsung s3 several times. Got a heat gun and everytthing. I've also replaced my macbook pro screen. Come to think of it.... I break a lot of screens.

I have a x5 (1st gen.) and am rather unhappy that fiio have added replaygain to the firmware for the 2nd generation x5 but not the first generation one.
 
This is sad as it is a feature many have been asking for ever since the x5 was introduced.
 
It would be wonderful if fiio could produce one last firmware upgrade for the 1st gen. x5 with replaygain - i would then be a totally satisfied customer

I would love replay gain on the original X5 too, but please don't disable OTG at the same time !!!
 
Also can you just give us the ability to scan OTG into the library like the X7 does???
