The Fiio X5 Thread

Of course it doesn't change the hardware, but I really don't want to adjust EQ settings to try and match what they've done when a quick reload of the FW can be done (and there is only one custom EQ setting). They definitely have been tinkering with the sound along the way. Not saying one is better or worse, just sharing my observations.

Well I did try EQing.  That didn't work at all.  It seems as though with firmware 2.0 they took off more than 10db from the 30-100hz regions because I could not eq that to save my life.  And then with fw 1.23 eqing the same region was too much so I think that they definitely took off more db than you can eq for.

Wait wait wait.  The X5 doesn't read tag info?  So whether you browse by folder or category, you still just use filename info to choose songs?

No, MP3Tag adjusts all the separate tags. X5 reads these, but not track number (think I recall). Its good practice to have track number at beginning of Track tag and actual Filename, then never any order problems in any player anywhere!

Can someone confirm that the X5 can't read the Track No. tag?  This apparently in addition to the fact it can't read the Disc No. (Part Of A Set) tag.

I've actually found that browsing by file or category doesn't allow you to see the songs with the tag info for the song title, track number, or disc number.  It just shows the files by file name.

Just to be clear on this, the X5 does read tag info including the track number and order tracks accordingly. It just displays songs by their filenames all the time.

-Where was your card formatted, on the X5 or elsewhere? (formatting the card in the X5 may make things better)

-What format is it in, FAT32 or?

-What brand of card are you using and where did you buy it from?

Joe, formatted on the X5 as was recommended here, in FAT32. I am using all SanDisk cards bought from Amazon, the new 128 GB ones, and also one 64GB card, all good quality cards.

I have a hunch about this. Is this happening most often while the X5 is in your pocket or you're otherwise travelling with the X5 and rarely while the X5 is stationary?

I am sorry but we did not do anything of the sort.

Encountered playback problem for some .DFF format DSD files on firmware 2.0
File not supported error message

Is it DSD64 or DSD128? The X5 only supports the former.

Another reason to move the database to the SD card. I'd prefer to leave the device as vacant as possible

Don't think that has anything to do with where the database is located, but more to do with whether old database is taking care of or not.

I was surprised when I left my X5 idle last night and it completely drained the battery. Ipods can be on idle for weeks.
Also, bought E12 to test. Conclusion - I like X5 as a stand along DAP better. E12 going back to the store.

This might be a silly question but should the gain setting make a difference to the line out signal? I am listening from the line out via a little dot mkiii with hd650s and momentums. I have just picked out low or high setting 5 times in a blind test. There's no real jump in volume like with the headphone out it's just a change in sound character.

Maybe it was already posted but...

It has been many years since the ipod 5gen video has come on the market.

And, aesthetically, the ipod is certainly the good looking father of the X5: I wonder why Fiio didn't manage to have a screen at least as big as....

Pity.

Ladies and Gentleman,

The update you've all been waiting for

Firmware v2.0 with bottom scrollwheel (1.23b will be made on request)

Changes made to stock fw2.0:
Changed homescreen background
Changed outer icons
Replaced "animated" on screen scrollwheel with static image

Well done CH23, it looks and functions just fine.

Many thanks to you.

FiiO should be taking notes of this better UI

For any that are interested, I have added the more attractive spinning LP 'album art missing' placeholder to CH23's fantastic "bottom scrollwheel mod" which he posted above.

This time, I have Photoshopped the placeholder to be darker and have a hue that suits the X5 theme better.

Here is the link to Firmware 2.0 with CH23's bottom scrollwheel mod and the above album art missing placeholder:
