The Fiio X5 Thread
Dec 14, 2013 at 10:43 PM Post #2,146 of 19,652
Nah, that's just to show you how much more  complicated is the X5's design next to the X3's. And that PCM1792A is nice and is the the best TI DAC chip on the market. I'm sure they've done their homework and its implementation will be top-notch.

Well there are a few things I like about it not the dac though but again I might be proven wrong. The wheel is one of the features I like and the 2 sd card readers for ample storage if I am not mistaken does it come with 128gb internal ram or less?

What's the expected list price?

No internal memory, according to James:

I read that the first batch of 2000 units of X5 will be available for sale in China on X'mas.

I also saw an impression stating that the SQ is almost up to DX100 level....

So far, the published spec and internet impressions seem to indicate that X5 is worthy to be considered as "audiophile" DAP... (this is X5 to be used as a standalone DAP not the FOTM DAP + AMP combo)

as for the X7, I am not sure when we will see this released..... considering that their next project is X1....

I expect X7 will appear about 12-15 months from now, but not because of the X1.

I think the X1 will not take long to develop, because it can use similar firmware to X3/X5 and will be a simpler version of these DAPs (control wheel system from X5, but audio circuitry probably a bit similar to X3).

I know I'm speaking very simplistically, here, but you get the general idea.

That is the beauty of Fiio building a portfolio of DAPs - each subsequent DAP can use some of the experience, technology, and design work from the DAPs that came before it, thus shortening the amount of development time (especially when making a lower-range DAP, like the X1)

To all the questions about USB OTG on the X5: it's to connect to external storage. :)

Well there are a few things I like about it not the dac though but again I might be proven wrong.

The PCM1792 is highly regarded; perhaps it's not on par with a Sabre DAC, but it's apparently close. Indeed, you'll find the PCM1792 in many high-end CD players. At $400, the X5 would seem an excellent bargain.

Still, I'm not sure about DSD playback. Fiio's site rather explicitly boasts of the X5's DSD capability, but James previously stated the X5 won't handle DSD without a firmware update, TBA 2014. It reminds me of the marketing tricks iRiver used when they first released the AK120.

Regards,
Brian
