Anyone else have an opinion on the Sennheiser HD428...thinking of pulling the trigger on these.  Thanks!

Yes.  They are good headphones.  However, with a bit of elbow grease, they become great headphones.  I went through the process of performing a second set of modifications on a pair that I've owned for over a year and I documented the process with pictures.  I hope to get a thread started on my mod process so others may benefit from it.  However, before I create such a thread, I'll search to ensure another thread isn't already in place.  But, I'll assure you, my modification has gone further than any other mod of the HD-428s in the past.

Realizing that sound and how it's interpreted is very subjective, but for me, I can state that my current HD-428s can out-gun a modded Fostex T50RP when it comes to "fun" factored in.  The bass is ever-present and solid.  The mids are there and the upper frequencies have detail, but are not overbearing in any way.  I'm quite sure that Sennheiser never imagined that the HD-428s could have so much potential because if most owners were to take enough time to properly mod them, it would cannibalize some of the sales of their headphones further up the food chain.

A quick shot of my "finished" product:

Sorry to have taken this thread somewhat off-topic, but I thought it was relevant to anyone who is considering purchasing these under-$30 "wonders" by Sennheiser.

The 419 are darkest of the newer 400 series, If you ever heard a Px100, that's the sound sig they have, The 428 deal being much better.  Some 419 love for ya!!!

Urban Inspirations at amazon.ca has the Beyer DT250 250 ohm for $49.95 again. They cancelled my previous order, saying no stock. Let's see what transpires this time round.

Also, Canada Computers has the Pioneer SE-MJ591 for $88.88 (regular price $399.99).

So, the nice people at seyo-shop.com apparently had a pair of Denon D2000s for $298+ $24 shipping. Finding that a reasonable price, I gleefully send them an email confirming if they really had these in stock for the advertised price. I'm told that these are the last pair, so I rush back to buy them. Price is now $580 + $28 shipping. I'm a little pissed, but I see a pair of D5000 for $579, so I assume they have more inventory of these than the D2000. I place an order for, only to be told that the entire Dx000 line is out of stock and I should check out the "New and Improved" Denons.

All efforts in making contact have since been unsuccessful. Project Prometheus has failed and the face-hugging D7100 has taken over :D .

Oh yeah, the refund is still taking its own sweet time to reach me.

I know exactly the feeling, i made phone calls to a store in Japan, and got the same treatment, that sorry, they ran out of stock, and told me they will get me the same cans from another store for twice the price, i refused to pay that amount of money. I finally found them refurbished somewhere else, for a decent price.

Japan is only bet to find them new, but those guys ask for a lot of money.

On the brighter side of Japan, the Fostex TH900 could be picked up for as little as ~$1700, shipped from pricejapan.com. And lawton audio is doing upgrades on them now. Imagine the TH900 with the aftermarket upgrades  .
