Hey guys, thanks for all the input. It looks like for me the final comparison will be the Shure 940s vs the Sony Z1000s. So far I have appreciated all of your excellent thoughts.

If anyone has experience with both of these headphones and can tune in on how they compare with one another, I would be infinitely grateful. I listen to mainly jazz, but also some rock/folk rock, classical, and a lot of hip hop.

I'm pretty sure the headphone you are looking for is the HD 650. Jazz is not bass-reliant and is mid-heavy. The 650 is ideal for that.

I thought he wanted closed. The 650 is not closed.

I would suggest that you get some 'open' headphones if you're going to be listening mainly to jazz. Now that you add HipHop to your equation, the Shure wont probably give you complete satisfaction. BUT still, they are a great set though I would recommend something like the Sennheiser HD600s... If you still have your mind set on closed cans, my vote will go for the Shures. (be aware that you need a good source/tracks for the Shures, they have emphasized highs and the clarity will be amazing...)

Also, since this is still the "deals" thread, I believe earphonesolutions.com still have their 15% coupon active so the 940s would cost you like $250 new...

Guys, this is a deals thread.  Please hold discussions regarding "I want x y and z in a headphone, what should I get?" in a different and more appropriate location.

J&R will do $210 shipped for AH-D2000s for anyone on Head-Fi (USA only). The sales mgr said the rumor of sub-$200 D2000s is bogus, they've not sold any below $210. So, call Ty at Ext 1011 and tell him it's the Head-Fi deal for $210 and he'll hook you up. They're starting to run out, so if you want one now you better hurry.

Peace,

Amazon (from Creative) has the CAL's for $54.99. Cheaper than they have been in a while...

Creative dings me for tax so I am vacillating between $60 CALs and $70  ZX700 mentioned up thread. Decisions, decisions.
