Anyone know of any Portable or small desktop Tube Amp/Dac with Toslink inputs for around or under $300?? New or used. I'm still pretty new to the AMP market so my knowledge is pretty limited at the moment. I know the e17 is a great deal but is there better out there that I should be looking at? Saw some cool little Chinese ones on eBay for pretty cheap but lord knows what kind of quality we're looking at there...

Here's one for example...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Class-A-12-6-series-6N11-12AU7-Tube-valve-vacuum-Hybrid-Headphone-Amplifier-AMP-/111001618753?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item19d8364941

And this one...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMSL-sApIII-High-impedance-Professional-TUBE-headphone-amplifier-BB-OPA2604-/290797739690?pt=US_Home_Audio_Amplifiers_Preamps&hash=item43b4e55eaa

Neither of them have toslink inputs but still are kinda interesting

Edit: I understand that the e17 is not a tube amp but it is a good low price amp/dac with a toslink and a lot of options.

How about a solid state DAC mated with a tube or hybrid-tube amp?

This DAC, Fire Phoenix, will accept optical, coax and USB inputs:

And then mate to your amp of choice. I have it connected to a Little Dot 1+ and find it a good match.

All the help is very kind, but lets get this back to a deal thread!

Yeah, if I didn't already have a bunch of stuff I'm trying to sell and didn't have to deal with customs, I'd be sorely tempted...

Its not a tube amp but still very very interesting at $169... I own the ef2a right now and the dac is very unimpressive and cracks a lot when ever the cord is slightly touched or even left alone. I think there maybe a problem with it so its actually about to be sent back to Amazon... Now the amp on the other hand is stupid powerful and incredibly smooth hence the reason why I wanna stay with a tube amp. It helped with the sparkle of the D5000's and made them calm down quite in the upper range. The smooth warm feeling of the tube amp was amazing and I'm hooked!! Which is why I want one with a proper Dac so I can see what it is I've been missing all this time. I had a shot at a EF5 but forgot to bid on time and lost it. Like new for only $281 :(

The Audioengine looks like a very solid amp and Amazon has it with Prime so I could have it tomorrow if purchased right now. Have anyone of you used or tried the Aune T1?? Its under $200 but doesn't have a toslink... Not sure if I'm overstating the need of the optical drive is there that much of a difference with the music vs the usb?? Always figured it was have a smoother delivery than the USB and would sound better but honestly I don't know, What do you guys think??

SPDIF input vs using a usb. Which delivers the best quality sound??

FYI - The sound from the DAC on the e07k was 10x better IMO than the ef2a. That was a total shocker

wow reading the tube pairing with the denons gives me a nervous itch.

Playing with fire. The odds of a successful pairing is not high. Denons need lots of current to keep the bass in line, and low output impedance. Tubes generally don't do either. Well unless its the Eddie Current Zana Duex or Woo WA6SE.....

If the treble QUANTITY bothers you, use an EQ, if its too harsh, try to find a smoother source (DAC) and keep the amp transparent.

Thanks for ruining all the fun. Haha just kidding, I'm well aware of your points. The only electrostat in the running is the ESP 950 but there's no reason to vote for it since it goes down to ~ $575 on Amazon regularly.

It bugs me that the HE-400 is winning by so much. Why not take the opportunity to try to get a great deal on one of the more expensive headphones, particularly the LCD2 and HE-500.

because the HE-400 is the best bang for buck

I agree.  I voted for the HE-500

AKG 240s $59 from shoreline on closeout.  This is only a few bucks cheaper than Amazon third party, but a reputable seller.
