What does the silver do?

 
Being that Grado headphones are very good on the detail, the silver cable tends to add more "sizzle" to the upper end.  It's not a good pairing and since silver cable costs quite a bit more, you are much better to invest your money in something else.
 
Again, this is my opinion but is also backed up by many members who have heard the combination before.

I have a set of Beyerdynamic DT-990 drivers for transplanting. I'm thinking of trying them in a set of Grado woodies. The drivers are 45 mm in diameter and 8 mm "thick."  
 
The PS-1000 drivers appear to match the diameter but how thick are they?

Magnum X and other Grados I have looked at are about there for thickness (varies...8 to 11 mm thick).

On a tangential note...trying reverse quarter-mod Sennheiser pads today and can't believe I didn't do this sooner.

Butt-ugly on my SR80 pinks, but soooooo coooooommmmffffyyyyyyyy....
