Did you have any success with your Coby? I have kind of given up on it. If a good deal on iFrogz pops up I will probably jump on it.

The mk II phones are all copies of the 2002 T50RP, with rectangularish baffles, so they wouldn't fit a T20v2 and they'd be even more wrong for the T20v1. But the T20v1 needs something different done to it anyway, so don't be afraid to get hold of some cheap "wrong" pads and get out your scissors and glue. See if you can tame The Incredible Honk.

I've now added a bass lens to the Grundig, to fix the problem with the too small 42mm hole in the baffle. The driver now rests on an 1mm felt ring on the inside of the baffle. I put the very thin felt damping disc back at the same time.

Bass apparently increased a bit as I wanted, but I have no idea if it's the added distance, or the "lens" effect that did it. Now I've got to have a long listen to hear if anything else has gone all wrong. Got to bring a friend over for a listen too, since I also modded the Dual. This can is a royal pain to damp, I've finally got to admit....

Does anyone have a good source of nice strain reliefs for headphone cables? I really don't want to have to use zip ties like Grado...

Tie knots in 'em.

The cables, that is.

That would be the simplest method of anchoring the cable and providing decent strain relief, and I'm surprised Grado is going to the trouble of using zip-ties, with their sharp edges. You can make your own classic strain relief with craftily-applied RTV silicone. Beyond that, I got nuthin'.

Well, that's not true either. If you're hurting for microfiber in a variety of colors and textures and densities, but you don't want to spend a lot, Aldi has you covered.

With my most recent mod of the Grundig and Dual, both sound good, but I'd give the upper hand to the Dual when it comes to extension. It's got higher highs, and good bass. With the Grundig, so far I have to decide between bass mod, or highs mod. Maybe there is still a mod for it though, but I'm running out of options. I've still got to compare headstage.

The Dual can really accept a lot of power. My guitarrist friend maxed the XCAN with it.

I'm beginning to wonder about this musician friend of yours...

Would you say the Dual passes all the basic tests (low-level, crescendo, toe-tap, upgradeitis-abatement) and thus can be used as a meterstick to measure your Grundig's progress against?

Yes, but I'm surprised now and then about things that I suddenly hear or that someone points out.... But you will hear the Dual sometime this summer, if things go as planned, and then you can compare it to your fine T50. Then I'll know if it can really be trusted as a meterstick. Tonight though, even my musician friend was happy abou the Dual (and also the xcan which he usually dislikes). When his recording studio is finally operating, then we'll compare it in there too. That could take some time though, the rooms are almost ready but then there is all that gear to install.

With the Grundig and the Dual, the thin pads and large exposure of the driver seems to do good for treble extension. The trouble with the Grundig is that bass gets a bit thin, and there is basically no damping to remove. Adding distance to the driver is good for bass, but at the cost of treble extension (air to instruments, etc). With the Dual, there is massive damping but still bass that's fine to my ears. I'm not sure what to do with the Grundig now. Maybe more dense pads to really keep the bass in / out. Maybe stronger damping of the grilles. Maybe I can't have both treble and (to my taste) strong enough bass. It's a very thin line to walk, to tune it exactly right.

It was up for less than an hour, I think. RelentlessSearch found it but it's not as though it sets off a claxon or calls my cell phone or anything. Someone got very lucky.

Edit: By the way, is it normal to find a white damping pad on the front of the driver in an HP-50S? My YH-3 had the black nonwoven fabric and a paper gasket, the HP-50S I've just opened has the black nonwoven fabric and a white nonwoven pad similar to what you'd find on the back of a fostex driver. And no paper gasket.

Yup thats how it is. On both HP-50S and HP-50A.
I'm not sure what positive purpose it serves......I removed the white disc, and then gasketed the driver with blutak.

And whomever got that YH-100, congrats!!
