I managed to break off both wires from their leads while unscrewing the housing and back magnet. I have killed my T40, for what I fear may not be the last time. On the other hand, I got to play with magnets.

How do you think the white damping affects the sound? So that I have some idea of what to replace it with.

smeggy, the spruced-up ECR-500 looks ridiculously awesome. How does it sound?

Well, it can be fixed.

If there's enough solder blob there, just use a soldering iron tip you can cheaply replace and apply some good flux to the wires and tack them back down.

If you don't think there's enogh solder blob, well, the sticker says to use only aluminum solder. which is mostly available in paste form, like this:

Solder-It Aluminum Solder Paste - ALP-21 : Hechinger

I say to use a tip you can easily replace because the aluminum in the solder already on the T40 tabs is very hard to clean off of a soldering iron tip, and makes it hard to tin for regular tin/lead uses. But if you're using a radioshack iron with tips that cost less than a buck each, just replace it. It's more annoying when it's a $6 PT-series weller tip.

That aside though, £50 for a mono headphone? Bonkers.

That took me some searching to find. Evidently shipping to UK only. Can they be rewired for stereo?

Yes, I did it with my pair, although you need to replace all of the cabling, not just change the jack. Quite nice, quite bassy little ortho.

Ah, thanks for warning me about the aluminum solder. Yes, there's a fairly large blob of solder on each lead, so I hopefully won't have to buy any aluminum solder. Any ideas on how to prevent it from happening again? The wires are extremely thin. Perhaps some electrical tape would be of use.

They didnt even run 3.

What da heck? Oh, you gotta show us a picture of that.

Back in the day, one of the audio/stereo mail-order houses sold a dynamic headphone that used the 'zact same headset but without the wondrous pumpkin/olive color scheme. It was called a Transducer Research TR5000H.

Here's the pics from the auction. I took one ear cup apart just to make sure that they're orthos and they are. They look exactly like your pictures in the ATH-2 thread.

I can load pics of the inside tonight when I mod them.

Edit: I'll post side by side pics as well

Ouch! I was hoping you could just loosen the screws and peel the diaper off, since it appeared to be held down with one little dot of glue in the center. Did that turn out not to be the case?

My guess is that it's only doing a moderate job of damping. Try some craft felt and if that's too much try a fiberglass or dacron wad.

VectorScan was one of the marketing names for their phono cartridges and styli, but I've never heard of VectorScan headphones! Wotta find! Looking forward to the photos. Be sure to bring out the pumpkin hues strongly to attract Seventies fans.

I'll actually be modding a little later.

wualta, in your modding thread, you put white door-sill sealer tape on the back of the driver. Since I don't have that, and don't know what it's like, what would be best. I have craft felt, super felt, and the fake chamois from Target.

Craft felt should do fine.
