I am finally getting my first ortho's. I am getting DAC's Akai ASE-40's . All ready tuned by Don. I am super excited. Now I am on the lookout for some ASE-50's which I know is going to be next to impossible. I have found a pair on a Japanese auction site, and I have a guy who works for me working in Japan right now so I have my fingers crossed I will get them. They are so beautiful, even if I don't like the sound I can just stare at them all day.

It will be a great first ortho

Progress Report:

I've played with various damping schemes on my HP-1 yesterday.

I've also lined the enclosure and the driver with tack so that the driver would have a good seal to the baffle, and the baffle would have a good seal to the enclosure.

money shot:

The pads were not sealed with doubled sided adhesive to the enclosure since I didn't want to close it up just yet.

Let me salute all those who have played with damping schemes. Throwing a few pieces of felt into the headphones may be easy, but making it exactly the way you wanted was hard. Not to mention the small space, After throwing a piece of thick red felt in there, its hard to fit anything else in there. The baffle would look like an expired tuna tin can, ready to explode anytime. So thank you, team Orthos, that was fun. (Not that I'm leaving, just yet.)

play with a pair of T20RP MK-II, re-sealing the slot and gap on the baffles...and inside the cups too with nippon tapes, without close the vented...
After simple mod now it sound more superior than my T20v2 mod...no kidding...too bad it lack comfort & the earpads flaking so soon...

haven't heard T50RP yet but i believe it's more superior than T20RP MK-II or T40RP MK-II since it is the modern Fostex flagship...

Now that looks like a good solid mod job. You make an excellent point about sealing the baffle to the cup. The rule of thumb is: for max low bass, go airtight all the way.

Even though, as ericj pointed out long ago, the replacement driver's part number is the same for all current Fostex RP 'phones, I believe the originally-supplied drivers are different. I think the stock T50RP does sound better than the stock T20RP mk II, even though pads, enclosure, etc appear to be the same. Glad to hear you've had good luck with the T20RP mk II. Like Faust2D says, seal every potential leakage pathway-- then you'll know how much low bass you can get from one of these miniaturized drivers.

Is that rock wool you're using to soak up random backwave mids and highs?

Let me put it this way: they're among the best closed headphones I've heard.

I was able to get hold of the same CD I used to audition the HE-5 owned by Absorbine_Sr at the meet last February: Song Up In Her Head by Sarah Jarosz. The penultimate cut, "Come On Up To The House", has a close-miked acoustic bass that will give the bass response of a headphone a good workout. Using the TP, you can easily hear gain riding, overmodulation on the vocals, and so on. It's devilishly good at retrieving detail in the top octaves, and overall tonal balance is very good.

You can already tell I'm using them as I would in a recording situation, which I know is not the way most of you listen to headphones. So we'll come back to this and approach it from a different direction.

, oh in case I forgot to mention, these are my personal best portable HPs - ever. Mod them a little and they will shame the ESW10 back into their burr hole.

ps wualta - keep the opinions comming, I am starting to listen more and more to the recording techniques as a friend mixes his bands own music and I have had the pleasure of listening to a few samples.
