Ok time for more patents, this time we are visiting the history of the great Rank Organisation. The people who basically brought this technology to headphones.
(you can also view relavant patents at: Patent Searching and Inventing Resources)
My old post with a bunch of Patents can be found here.

Possibly the original Wharfedale Isodynamic:
ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC TRANSDUCERS - Patent Review 3833771

Pioneer SE-series Piezo's? (What's this got to do with Rank!)
Vacuum stressed polymer film piezoelectric transducer - Patent Review 4064375
(and another pizeo from another company:Piezoelectric transducer - Patent Review 4156800)

Some kind of early Iso bar magnet design (says loudspeaker, but the design seems to be for headphones):
PLANAR VOICE COIL LOUDSPEAKER - Patent Review 3829623

Now here is something interesting from Strathearn, a subsidiary of The Rank Organisation.

EDIT:
I'll just keep adding stuff here.

Also here is a good link to see a whole load of planar drivers:

some non ortho updates, but still relevant as its planar news
biggrin.gif

after the great results from daming the chassis and sealing the baffle of my electrostatic floats, i decided to continue the ortho style modding, and make some pads.
i started out reducing the size of the baffle using "cardboard bitumen" and added some memory foam pads.

so how did it sound?
awful; closed in, and no bass.

im not exactly sure why yet, but i had to reduce the baffle size quite a lot to make them small enough to fit the pads, meaning it was like a huge inverted reflex disc (also known as a bass lens?), and i guess it didnt like that

edit: or maybe it didnt like being sealed? they sounded way better once i broke the earpad seal.

What would happen if you razorbladed a slit in the micropore so the solder tab was OVER the micropore instead of under it?

Just got off the phone with the "suppliers" - no stock

They claim a 10 day back order as they have to order in from Yamaha

yes, agree with your impression...ULS PRO900 are a lil' bit sibilance too and still too slow bass for me...

I was able to use my T30 yesterday, all day, with no discomfort. Today, not even 30 minutes. I just switched to my SR-Gamma mainly because switching to that I don't have unplug anything. I'm trying to do a needle drop and I'm afraid I'd screw something up if I switch headphones in the jack.

Interestingly, I hear a lot more of the noise in the T30 than the SR-Gamma. I read a description of the noise as sounding like bacon frying and that's a perfect description of what I hear with the T30. With the Gamma, it's pretty much silent, even with the volume cranked. I'm thinking maybe a bit of high end roll off with the Gammas.

Edit: Interesting thing about doing a needle drop. I'm doing Days of Future Past. On side 1, the right channel was consistently 1-2 dB higher than the left. I figured I must either have a misaligned cartridge or the levels set wrong on my EMU 0404 USB. On side 2, it's the left channel that consistently higher. So it's not my set up by the LP. I wonder how common this is

Speaker caulk. The stuff some mfrs. use to seal woofers to their baffles.

Are they being fed from the same output? Which amp is this, by the way?

As for levels being slightly off on pop LPs-- yes, this did happen, though it wasn't commonly noticed, because people weren't usually listening on headphones. In the world of analog, there are no rules. Still, something may be amiss-- that's part of the Analog Mystique too. Let us know if you discover anything.
