Glad you like them - I figure the woody Smegma SFI and Smegma Pro were enough for me, and I couldn't thank you enough.

Very cool...love the ortho community here on head-fi..

Heh, well it didn't take long.....

So I quickly whipped the HP-1 apart to test a theory, and it worked! Not perfect but a nice proof of concept.

That 3M micropore paper tape we've talked about.. I bought a 2" wide roll of it at the drug store a few days ago. After rubber-gluing the driver to the faceplate to seal it properly, I taped completely over the back of the driver, the whole thing, with micropore, which gives just a slight gap over the center tab wire. Trimmed it flush with the driver edge and put a sheet of thin, medium density felt over the existing foam pad in the cups and screwed it back together.

I cut a donut of the same felt to go over the front of the driver, under the pads. Anyway, end result? lots of really deep bass and lots of treble. Cuts their efficiency by half and is putting quite the strain on the mini3

I have Kabeers YH-1 here as comparison and it's quite the transformation. Deeper, more powerful, more slam and clearer top. They actually have some bite to them now but they still keep most of the smooth midrange

As I said, not perfect but a very quick and simple mod anyone can do in the time it takes to unscrew and screw the cups if you don't bother with the glue stuff.

So yeah, fun little experiment. I might try to redo it using a sheet of leather over the driver instead of the micropore tape which should tame the highs a bit better.

Good job! Maybe if you ever have to do another build for me I'll end up having to send you an amp as well.

I've got 3M micropore tape sitting beside me here....I tried it on my SFI's a few weeks ago and the result was not pleasant.......perhaps I overdampened by adding it to the dampening and not removing anything else?

Well the SFI is a much smaller driver so has a lot less residual air volume inside the driver and will quickly kill nearly all the bass, they really need an air vent. The Yammy driver is big and can take a lot more damping. Like I wrote, there is a small gap where the tape goes over the center wire but it's still pretty much sealed as I pressed the tape down firmly and only added the felt disc behind the driver to hold the tape in place.

when I signed on this am and saw the post , I immediately thought - woodied smeggycave masterpiece already??? LOL
What level of bass are we talking smeggy - Puck-SFI deep or modded stock housing T50rp50mkII deep ...... this is all getting far too complicated

I decided to make the Grundig even more comfortable with another layer of lambskin on the pads, sewn on. But it got a touch less treble now / a tuch heavier bass / a touch less headstage. I am tempted to place a thin piece of sponge under the pads. Because I have bass to spend. (the problem is, the pads are glued with some strong glue this time)
