I think it might sadly be time for me to follow suit. Not being able to find the best of the orthos and with prices of the Yamahas and others steadily rising, it's much easier and more efficient to go straight to the electrostats.

These days I have a severe case of brightness-itis, everything seems too bright and treble happy. Probably the light flu I have.

I thought a bit about your HP-50A cable, and I don't understand why you would want to pass it behind the felt. Isn't it routed along the side of the baffle? There's even a convenient sort of clip halfway to keep it in place. You can't see it very well here, but it's something like this

Uh, doh! That might very well fix my problems Ludoo, I didnt even think about that. As for making changes when sick, especially with something like flu, I find it best to not make any changes to the audio system at all. It really effects my hearing, badly. I had a free drive-through innoculation about 1.5 weeks ago, so with luck, I wont have that particular problem this year. Hope you get better soon though.

Good (kinda) to hear. Of course, it does mean more money must be spent, but hey, I was planning on going ESP950 eventually anyways. I really, really like those headphones. Too bad we cant get Koss to do an ortho, imagine little clip-on ksc series orthos, and a big ESP950-esque baby, with a gigantic driver like the T50v1 had.

Orthos do manage to do things both stats and dynamic headphone do and that makes them very cool. I just wish someone would go all out and make an ultimate ortho with today's materials, SR-007 of the ortho world. I imagine a headphone like that would be compatible with anything on the market. Sadly this will not happen anytime soon.

OK. I finally got to work, with horrible laryngitis, so I am sitting here in my miserableness. The good thing is that my ears seem to be fine now and I have just un-boxed these wee orthos headphones. They are as tiny as YHD-1 but much lighter since YHD-1 use more metal and heavy plastic. These are very light off-white with gray fake leather headband and pads. They sound mono (duh) muddy with rolled off HF, but a lot of bass. This shows potential. Here a few bad cellphone pics for you.

Do you think the Tie Fighter will improve separation once you have them recabled to stereo?

Hi Larry,
sadly I won't get to hear them for another 9 hours or so. The mail arrives after I leave for work so I have a long wait. Ah well, I'm sure I'll like them seeing as I'm an SFI fan

Those new 50's look great Faust, awesome find! And yes, Tie fighters are very good at separating things

I had this old piece of walnut burl that's been in my basement drying for the last two years so I decided to make a knobbly volume knob for a forthcoming amp.

I got the Yamaha YH-2s today. They sound REALLY good stock. I was very surprised. They definitely are power hungry. I had to put a 2c51 in my Supra Extreme to get enough gain.

Question .... I heard some resonance on heavy bass hits and /or kick drum. Is this what you are talking about fixing when you are address damping the driver? The sound almost reminded me of Grado driver going bad.

The headphone is very revealing and gives bad recordings no where to hide. But, the driver is so fast that the flaws dont register like they do with some headphones. I thought the sound was quite good with the stock cable and I dont know if I want to chance messing that up with a cable that may make them to analytical; a cable making them very slightly less analytical would be perfect. The driver damping is a must though if that is the fix for the resonances I heard.

All in all I have to thank dBel84 for a rock solid recommendation.

One thing I forgot to metion was that the headphone was to big for my head. I used a Beyer DT770/880/990 headband pad and it fit very well and completely solved the fit issue I had.

YHE-50S are indeed cool, sorry I do not have aything for a size comparion but they are very small with BIG bass, might make very good portable as these should be the specs if these have the same drivers as YHD-2:

Technical Specifications:

Impedance: 125 ohms
Frequency Response: 20 - 20,000Hz
Magnet: Isotropic Ferrite, 38mm
Diaphragm: 6 micron polyester
Sensitivity: 97 dB/mW
Rated Input: 1000mW

....and ja ja, viz a tie fightah zere iz no room for mono soundz to hide.

What a great knob. Looks vintage like. Really cool.

the damping primarily balances things out - tames the highs and brings them more in align with the mids, I have noticed tighter bass control too - this should solve some of the resonances but you may just be driving the amp too hard and it is clipping. As you say, these headphones are not easy to drive.

The cable choice really comes down t personal choice - Mine was mono and thus I had no choice. The stock cable on Yogi's YH2's was nasty and really needed to be replaced, his HP-1 howevver had a decent stock cable and I left it alone.

I reckon I have the smallest pip on the block and the beauty about these frames is that you just bend the spring steel and make it fit. Ludoo's YH-100s were loose and I anticipate having to adjust the pair that I hope to have in my grubby paws.

I would be curious to see if a selection of your amps all give you the same bass resonance - this may suggest a driver defect ( either very loose or somehow damaged over time?? )

ps Smeggy - that walnut burl looks gorgeous
pps f2D if you ever consider moving those YHE50's along, keep me in mind

My package of Grado cans with blown drivers from Greece is waiting for me at the post office. Unfortunately, my wife's car is in the shop so has my car today and I'm stuck at home (I work out of a home office, so I am working too)...

So, YEAH! Setting up the lathe this weekend, but I might try some "enclosure" volume experiments with PVC pipe first. Thinking about fabbing up a little clamp mount to use two end caps so I can vent the rear one and vary the volume a bit before turning in wood. I'd seal the cap to pipe line with blue tack. What do you guys think? I just planned to wrap the outside in felt to dampen the PVC if it rings realizing there are inherent sonic issues with the enclosure. But, I should be able to hear changes in the sound with volume differences.

Also, my Mouser order showed up today so now I finally have all the parts I need to build my MAXes and Aikido 24V too.
