Orthodynamic Roundup

Thanks again for the advice, I will explore for sure! Im doing baby steps every day basically. Right now is the exploration of @spoony mod. Felt then foam makeup pad. Im sure there are more variables but I have a T30 coming today and new foams arriving tomorrow. I contacted @BucketInABucket about his RP18 as well. My YH-1 may have a treble imbalance (not to mention sometimes clamp imbalance due to to broken adjuster) - I will need to compare results of measurements. I am actively watching eBay for another.

I did use two small strips of micropore just to hold materials in place while closing back up. Hopefully not a probelm.

Any ideas on headband mods or replacements for T30. Not arrived yet but I read its on the extra small side and lacks good articulation. I would like to keep stock headband intact so reversible or a replacement would be preferred.

@Philimon - are you also using a measuring rig to check your mods and document the trials?

Hey Phil, you do not have to worry about the headband. I have a big head :L3000:but it fits me with no problem and it still have more extension left.

But of course. Check that other friendly forum for measures. I'll post measurements here too if requested. I feel less worried about sharing measurements at ____ because I feel on average users there are more familiar with the limits of EARS so more received as just a comparison tool without argument about accuracy. I do not want to spread misinformation with bad measurements to random users. Most of the active participants here on ortho round up are high level on experience/knowledge so I wouldnt be opposed to posting measures here in this thread, but in general I've gotten too much bad feedback for posting EARS on HF.

Just ignore the haters.
If they're too stubborn to accept that a measuring rig is only as strong as it's catalog of measurements, that's not your problem.

The whole point of the EARS rig is so that all EARS users can share relatively comparable graphs - they're literally made with compensation files so that they can be used comparitively for hobbyists and enthusiasts.
Sure, we're not all using the same source equipment or methodology but nobody out there with their super expensive rigs are doing that either.

I hope you dont mind a hobbled headband. Could be rigged to fit well in a fixed position but the quick adjustment mechanism is broken. When I get a satisfactory mod Ill send. YH-1 maybe has some peaky issues in upper mids compared to YH-2. I need to look at more individual YH-1 measures with distortion graphs like Tyll’s. I know you’re a modder VanHai so would be good to get some feedback and more ideas.

Vanhai sold T30 because his heavily modded T50RP(s) crush, and T30 is not easy to mod. I need to try T50RP again but with custom enclosure. Ive tried T50RP mods long ago and know they can be beastly but I was never fully content with the sound. A better enclosure would likely make a huge difference based on my experiences since then. And I have a bit more knowledge and materials now.

Not tested yet because hair is wet from shower. Headband seems plenty big but there is still the lack of articulation for angling, but there is some play or possibly an articulation feature from the driver/pads baffle. Its like the front baffle is on a pivot but swing is limited due to outer shell / back baffle. Will take pics when I take apart. The pads cover the entire width of the baffle. Weight is not bad at all. The headphones may have seen some comfort work, there is foam on headband in key areas to reduce noise from cup contact - doesnt seem that would be stock but I dont know.

Those are pretty. If the T30 has the fat wide pad with the small hole like the T20 & OEMs, I think it would be trivial to see if the info from the AKG patent was testable. Or how much impact a hybrid pad might have. Objectively speaking. Slip a disk of some absorbing felt / foam / mystery material in between the pad and the baffle. Cut a big hole just a touch smaller than the pad opening. Or not. Or multiple ones. Or ??? Just a thought.

Would have to convert to flat plate coupler mode to measure well. Tried pushing a bit to get a seal but it's hard to get even. Ear pad hole is small. Ear pad like rubber with no foam. So much pressure on the back of ear lobes. I don't have them on as typing because ouch. When I took them off I could see a defined imprint. Started getting a headache from the pressure. Wualta I think said worst ever comfort and is a torture device. Definitely moves more air than the Yams but it soon wasn't helping the pressure feeling on my skull. Highs are muted for sure and makes uppers mids sound more prominent. Weird transition. Soundstage weird too, very left/right. Going to open up and hopefully spark some ideas for ergonomics.

@JadeEast will try. And I'll get a pic of pads.

Big baffle and recessed highs means I could try thicker circumaural pads and hybrid pads. Angled pads placed backwards for better fit. Approx 80mm baffle. Not sure how damping would help here since bass thru mids is already pretty linear stock. Maybe some resonance control clears things up a bit.

Actually I could just do the felt underneath pad mod, but just have more risers front side to better fit angle of my head. Easy, cheap, +highs. And if that doesnt boost highs well enough, then Ill try velours or hybrids.

Same wool disc used in T10. Brown wool felt circle underneath pads but I think used as buffer against ear-side grill and not for breaking seal like @JadeEast is suggesting. The grill is plastic mesh like in T10.

The front baffle is not fully sealed to back of cup, there is a little wiggle allowed for angling but it totally disrupts seal. Hmmm

Front baffle lm pretty sure is meant to rotate (small degree) and designed not to have a seal. I found that the wiring to driver terminals are a bit in the way of full forward/inward tilt. I flipped the cups around to move the terminals towards the back so that way the front area was fully clear of blockage so front side could rotate its max to closed (which means backside is fully rotated to its max of open). These few extra degrees of angle helps relieve some of the pressure on the back of the ear lobes.

I also left removed the wool damping discs. Its flying free with maybe even more air flow from front baffles turned to max angle.

It could be brain burn-in but the soundstage doesnt sound as weird. Less back damping usually means less extended bass, more midbass, less highs, slower transients. I could exchange worse technicalities for more comfort atm. Tonality change, unsure but doesnt sound as weird as before, again could be brain burn-in. Still dark, probably less dynamic fast bass but still goes deep. I listened a very small duration originally because discomfort.

I remember reading in Wualtas thread about there being grease or something around edge of drivers. Felt some grease seeping from the slots where the driver tabs tunnel thru driver’s plastic enclosure edge. There is a patch of electrical tape to dam up the excess slot in plastic but as you can imagine the greasr causes that tape to just slide around. Any recommendations for what to replace that tape with?

edit: Upper mids still shine but not as bad as before. I was hoping undamping would bring lower mids and upper bass up more to sound more balanced.
