Interesting work. These are hella expensive, but might fit the bill, imo:

I'd recommend these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301766583653

Really cheap, made of a very nice pleather and aren't too stiff like most cheap Chinese earpads are.

Would any other pads fit on them? I love HM5s myself and they're generally the only ones I use nowadays. Not gonna add to the sorb hype anymore btw; just try it and see for yourself

Oh, I forgot to add this in my edit on my previous post. If you buy a pair of CD2/380's and want me to replace the fabric for you I'll do it at cost of postage. I've got some of that thin lambskin left over. I've even got a Brown microsuede that feels pretty darn primo and should seal a lot better than the stock cloth. I could also buy some Black microsuede from eBay if color matching is your thing. Not a big deal for me to stitch you some pads, tbh, don't worry about. I've gotten "pretty good" and relatively quick at the job having made myself quite a number of ear pads in the past. Here's the CD280 pad out of lambskin before the YHD-3 drivers were swapped in:

Do you think you could put a big square piece of sorb or even a glob of molding clay over the masking tape without ruining everything you've got going right now?

Yeah totally, wouldn't ruin a thing.
While the tape is totally non-permeable, there is still some airflow as it's only stuck to the mesh covering the driver, although it's probably negligible.

Woah, those pads are crazy expensive. (they do look nice though)  I'd only think of blowing that kind of money on a flagship level model.
But the description in the listing made me chuckle. "Please a message that you do not know, it is worrisome."

I had an idea last night about something else I could try out, so I'm still not done myself either.

But thanks for the suggestions. I'll get onto it soon, maybe i'll try blue tack first since it's easier to clean up.
I'm going off modelling clay due to it being such a royal pain to apply and clean up afterwards.

Hey Vintage Orthoheads, I see there a bucketload of new Orthos out there. Don't think there's a Volkortho (Pro30 replacement) out there quite yet.
Some of them look promising. Anyone who's got some experience with the Yammy and old Fostexen had a a chance to listen to the new breed of Orthos?
If so, what's the opinion on the olde ones vs new?

I wish I heard the newer stuff, but I just haven't seen anything within the price range needed to make me spulrge, as sad as that might sound. Still having too much fun modifying the old stuff for waaaaay cheaper. I can buy three sets of drivers for less than one of the new guys (even used), spend "the rest" on enclosures, and then throw years at experimentation trying to get everything sounding just right to my ears. It's honestly not worth it to me to spend money on "new" headphones, and -for me- going to headphone meets is a whole different can of worms I'd rather not go into publicly right now. It's getting to the point, however, that I've exhausted so much of the cheap vintage options out there I'm afraid no vintage ortho is "worth it" to me these days. I'd almost sooner buy one of the $200 range DIY Russian oddballs than anything else just to see what those guys are up to, see if I feel I can help in any way and then ultimately pursue some kind of connection between them and I... The "Volkortho" is obviously something I'm interested in having attempted to found Crop Circle Audio, though. I like the idea of getting the same sound out of a 40mm driver as we can a Fostex T50 and its clones, but the reality of that is, well the reality of that. I'm enjoying my YHD-3/CD280 right now (immensely so, tbh), but how it compares to a T50? I honestly can't tell you having never had the pleasure of owning or auditioning one. Compared to a "stock" (refurbed pads, all else left stock) ID1, however? I'd say the little frankenweenie YHD3 performs favorably.

It's no big thing to find pads that will let you use the HP1 circumaural.

Dang. I really thought a lot of the U70/ZX701IP before gifting them away. Again, I'll reiterate the same exact headphone with aniso HP-1's sounded lifeless in comparison to U70's. I feel like something went dreadfully wrong here. Will perhaps look into that in the future. Can explain in further detail, but the intricacies of what I feel took place are unimportant right now, imo.

Oppo PM1 - Smooth warm, touch less detailed than some above(?) Or maybe just smooth FR makes nothing jump out - this is a good thing.

Noooooo. Not the "boring" "bear trap." Please. I'll take anything that sounds engaging over something else that's "technically correct" any day of the week. I'm not saying I'd find the PM-1 to sound boring if I heard it myself, it's a headphone that's greatly intriguing to me, but I'll never settle for a boring headphone, it might as well be in the garbage, imo.

Not a huge fan of the sound either.
I can objective totally appreciate it's quality.. I'm just more of a Fostex man ma'self

Polarity is GOOD! I'll stay in the Yamahoe camp for the time being. That said I still think the second gen T20 is one of the greatest phones ever if you can drive it properly. Not heard the latest MKIII versions of the lineup so I have no idea what they are all about.

Haha, you're overreacting slightly

The Oppos are definitely musical. Just not in the exciting V-shaped-signature kind of way.
More in a subtle, whiskey-by-the-fireplace kind of musical.

Are you referring to the T20 V2? (with the circular drivers and seemingly random hole pattern)
(these versions are so confusing to keep up with)
