Most overrated headphones?

King of Metal, Electronic, Gaming, and Movies, yep.

Electronic definitely goes to AKG K340 or Hifiman HE-6... But movies and Gaming = D7000

Don't forget Metal.

As for Electronic, I haven't heard those two, but let's just say prior to the D7000s I had zero interest in Electronic, and that includes the D2000s.

To me, it's not laid back - it's a lot more neutral than most cans, but I can't call it laid back.  Occasionally I'll grab my 780s if I want a sharper, more colored sound when listening to metal - but the LCD-2s don't bother me at all.  I'll probably be labeled a heretic, but I can't stand Grados for metal - it feels like nails being driven into my eardrums with those.  If I want a more "blowing-your-eardrums-through-your-eyeballs live sound" metal, the LCD-2s aren't the cans for it, though.

It sure felt laid back coming from the D7k and T1. In fact, the entire sound just felt distant and laid back to me. It was like the bass was front and center thumping while the rest of the music was in the next room. Perhaps that works for some genres but not mine. I hated my Grado SR225i also. But I dunno, I guess most headphone feels boring now because my first real can was the incredible D2000, which I'd still be using if I didn't splurge for the D7k.

Random people? No, friends and family. I'm just pointing out that the AD700, while not good looking by any stretch, is still something I can wear at home without much issue, unlike the LCD.

If you're in an abusive situation you need to get professional help.

If that's not the case I'd say I'm sorry you live in a house filled with plastic furniture.

What the hell? Did it never occur to you that I might find it ugly and not wish to be seen wearing it? What a concept.

Wow. I apologize. You could've said that in your previous post then instead of using your family/friends as an alibi. But instead you let on that the reason was because your family and friends disapproved your wearing the LCD-2s and that was what information I had to reply on.

Have a good day.

Because I live with family and have friends over all the time and don't want to be seen with these cans. How is that an alibi and how did I imply they disapproved? If I was going to be told not to wear cans, you think I'd be spending $1000 on them? They look worse in person than in pictures and I don't want it on my head.

Uh, no. At $80, the AD700 is the biggest bargain ever for Classical. Yes they're ugly, but the LCD-2 are 10x uglier and yet nobody is bashing on that. Even if I loved the LCD-2 I couldn't keep it because I refuse to be seen with that thing on my head. Of course the AD700 has issues, but comfort and grainy sound are most definitely not it. That thing feels like a cloud on my head and it certainly does not have grainy sound. If you want grainy, check out the HD598s. It's not like I don't know about their sound flaws, look at the other cans I own, but for $80 they are phenomenal for anything non bassy, and of course they are one of the best competitive gaming cans ever.

The K701/702 is disliked by some people because of the boring, cold, analytical, etc sound it has. However I have yet to see "60% of the population" hate them, I've barely seen them bagged on in fact.

We're not bashing it because most of us feel the opposite, that they are fine looking cans. If you care what random people think about your choice in fashion then they're probably not for you though.

i personally could care less what a pair of headphones look like as long as they sound good. personally i think my shure srh840 looks very professional and expensive in it's own way.

I agree, it's too bad I hate both the sound and the look. If they brought me audio nirvana, it'd be a different story. Also the srh840 (and 99% of headphones for that matter) looks much better than the LCD-2. If you care to look in my post history, you'll see before I ordered them I said I would never buy them because of their looks, but because of the reviews and recommendations I went for them anyway.

Have to agree with others who said the 701's.

But, and a big BUT,  I'm going to give them another try, I use a much better amp, the Lyr, now, since I first used the 701's.
I recently acquired a pair of 702's, same sound according to everyone who has tried both, and will give them a shot.

If I was going by sheer fanboy-ism, I'd say the Audio-Technica M50. If there was ever a headphone that I would like to see recommended never again, that would be it. Judging by the posts you would think the M50 could walk on water all the while acting as Viagra for the listener. Alas, this is a gross exaggeration. As for things that I've actually heard, I'm gonna name my headphone of choice the AKG K701.  While a wonderful headphone, fanboy's can ruin anything by glossing over faults and over-praising what it gets right.

Please, explain this as your statement seems especially incendiary.

I think I can chime in, over $150 or so, the effects of diminishing returns seem to really come into play at least IMO. most top tier IEM's sound better than the lower priced alternatives, but the improvement in sound becomes smaller and smaller (it might be better to say top tier IEM's instead of a exact price range though)
