Anyway, I have enough balanced/neutral 'phones. I want to hear this JVC timbre folks are talking about. Also the positive comparison with the K2 is intriguing.

FOTM is just what a person calls an IEM when it's justifiably gaining popularity despite the person not liking/owning it.

The GR07 has been the FOTM like 3/4 of a year now. Heh.
Anyway, I'm a FOTM kinda guy.

Interesting.  I've always thought of "Flavor of the Month" phones as those that are prematurely or unjustifiably popular.  Where marketing hype and/or amateur sensationalism of the product's capabilities boost its popularity before any real, trusted, level-headed community consensus is built around it.  This, inevitably, drops them from their initial, (unworthy) astral plane of worship to their realistic, (deservedly) earthly status.

I don't consider the FXT to have reached that kind of status (nor do I think it will).  Despite it being around for some time, there hasn't been a sizable number of owners/reviews of the product.  For the few who have reviewed it favorably (Inks, shotgunshane, ericp10, etc.), I feel they've built up enough goodwill here at HeadFi, shown objectivity, and accurately described the sound.. justifying it's praise (at least from this HeadFi'er).  Like I said, the FXT isn't purporting to be something it isn't (the pinnacle of neutrality or detail).  For a slightly colored, musical phone.. it's simply fantastic.  It's just a damn. good. phone.

Being a phone that delivers fantastic sound beyond what's largely heard at its pricepoint doesn't, to me, warrant the label of FOTM.  I don't consider the GR07 a FOTM, either.  It's been around for quite some time and had a diverse, healthy consensus built around it.  More than a few experienced listeners have mentioned its sonic capabilities are within clear earshot (pun unintended) of top tier universals.. that isn't FOTM.  That's a.. damn. good. phone.

Anyways.. I think you'll like the FXT, ABG (coming from a fellow fan of the GR07).. let us know your impressions.

GR07 by that measure should be called FOTY, not FOTM

I don't think FXT are FOTM.... yet! For a long time, I wished it got some attention considering the spotlight on GR07 for long. At present, it's just got some well deserved attention, nowhere near the frantic FOTM levels. I would wait for Joker's and clieOS' reviews.

Despite my previous early assessment of FXT90 not being quite equal to RE262, I do think it is a very good IEM for the price and still well earn a place in the top category, maybe just not in the top-of-the-top. I am a sucker for dual dynamic and FXT90 is certainly the best I have ever heard.

I do agree in that the RE262 is more proficient, but it's not practical and has poor build IME. That's some really high praise, specially since you've heard the TWF21r DDM2.

I think I'm becoming a sucker for dual micro dynamics.  I really like the Tandem too.

Yep, but I also prefer the more fun sounding DDM over the more controlled DDM2,

Exactly. It has stopped being a useful term since I've seen folks use it to malign or otherwise put down capable and worthy 'phones.

The label is too freely thrown around, IMHO. It used to bother me when the label was used as an unjustified insult.

Put it this way: SE215? Definitely a FOTM, and it lasted our good graces for just about a month.

GR07. Not a FOTM, despite it being labelled as such for at least 6 month (and possibly more). (Mostly because it's not made by Sony...)

That's why I embrace the term now.

16 hours into burn in and I must say that I am loving the FXT90. More 'portable' than my RE-262 as well.

I though we were speaking in terms of proficiency, keeping in mind your ratings of the two.

So cute... I got in the Bluecell tips. These tips have the widest diameter of any tip I own that will fit the super wide nozzle of the FXT90. And I've found that wide is good, but widest isn't. These tips significantly cuts the beautiful deep layered bass in the FXt90. What it does do very good, however, is bring those horns really out and gives the FXT90 it's best highs. But where's the bass? It also gives the JVC the widest soundstage. With that said, I need my bass!! I will try these with the 7550 and GR07 later, but right now the Monster foam hybrids have pulled out ahead (again) as favorite tip for the FXT90, followed by the JAYS (if was easier to get them on) and the dark blue Panny silicons. I also like the Sony large hybrid with foam. Back to the Monsters.

So I can't figure out where the vents are on the FXT90. There have to be one (or two) with all of the bass it's pushing. Anyone knows?

ericp10,  Strange things these tips...lol.  I am finding that wide is good also..... but not so much on the FXT90.  I was reading the RE272 thread where someone sugested Senn olives...I asked what they were and he described a silicon tip that had a lower profile...joker called them mushrooms.  So, I looked at what I had, and pulled out the tips that shipped with the FXT90....JVC tips...9mm...lower profile, probablly about the same as the Bluecell tips...also 9mm.  I've had the RE272 for over a month, about 200 hours on them.  With these JVC FXT90 large tips, the RE272, known to be bass light, have picked up more low end, and overall they have lost the dry sound, and they are more musical.  Prveviously I had been using the large GR07 silicone tips on the RE272, and I felt those were the best tips until I used the FXT90 tips.  The green Sony tips that came with the GR07 also worked very well on the RE272...........exciting times to hear them blossom with the different tips.  After returning the 7550, I have ordered the RE262, should be here later this week.  I am looking for phones that excell with vocals, as that is the focal point of my library.  I do listen to many different types of music, and I felt the 7550 did the best job on the type of country music that I like.  The first time I had the RE262, I didn't give them a real chance, sent them back a few days later.  Since then I found out how much difference "burn in" and tips can make..

I am finding that the fun in this sport is really in "the chase", and as soon as one thinks they are satisfied.... a new "chase" begins.... making things fun, confusing, and in need of a good bank account.  More is better, more is better..........

All that said, I asked you what these Monster foam hybrids were....are you referring to Monster Foam Supertips?   I've tried Supertips many times on the FXT90, 272, GR07, and 7550, and they didn't work for me.

I had thought about the Fischer Audio Tandem, but shotgunshane asked someone that reviewed the Tandem how they compared to the RE262, and though that person liked the Tandem very much.... he gave the RE262 high marks, also reviews by joker and ClieOS ranked the RE262 above the GR07....don't think I would like the Tandem....
