if we throw out original and replacement costs, amp matching, and what they are going to be used for from critical listenng to the gym; four does cover most activities.  But I believe those four should all be from different companies; unless you are really sure you like that groups signature sound.

Maybe 100. Get everything. Slowly release one by one. The last headphone remaining is the winner in your heart.

There is a budget for everyone. Maybe some folks have an unlimited budget but remember the less you spend on headphones gives you more to get ancillary equipment to make the headphones you have sound better. Many here also have less headphones because they sold the gear they have to get the best headphones.

Many like myself really don't like that many headphones. I am worried to try new ones though because if they work I will really want them.

This hobby is many things for many people. For some maybe it is having 50 sets of headphones.

And you can really go crazy. Not only do people have headphones for each genre of music but the extreme would be to have a set of headphones for each favorite song. My idea is to spend less on having every headphone but have gear to make all music sound good and interactive.

For many it is getting the ultimate sound out of only one pair. I can count on one hand the number of headphones that I have found that make me happy. I guess that makes me a person to only have a few pairs?

I tend to take everything I do to the extreme. For example Im really big into car audio. I have 2 vehicles. One has a full system in it. Alpine 9887 Headunit with Bluetooth, AudioSystem Twister 6 channel from Italy, Audiomobile 10" sub, Eclipse SC6500 mids and Morel made Xtant tweeters. In my closet I have a set of 3 way Powerbass Extreme components for my SUV, a set of Adire Audio Koda 8" subs and a Stereo Integrity BM 10" sub. 4 mismatched pairs of subs, 2 cars. Not sure what Im going to do with the rest.

As for headphones I have Shure SRH750DJ's that I use alot, then my Grado SR80i, VMODA Crossfade LP Customs, FocalPrice SK700's, and some older JVC Marshmallows. Im still looking at acquiring more.

not the headphone, the careful tuning of the equalizer is the main miracle here

1 for home: Grado Labs SR325is
1 for running, traveling, everything: some cheap Yurbuds, I like their nice fit and the fact that I can hear my surroundings (mostly while running)
