guys he-500 vs k701 comparison?

How much better is the he-500?

I hate to compare headphones I did not own at the same time, but in this case it is easy...
They are in a different class and the price difference is fully justified. Let me just say that: when I had the K701 I basically stopped listening to rock and pretty much any kind of vocals, so dull and lifeless they sounded. With the HE-500 you get toe-tapping bass impact and sweet, goosebump-inducing mids that my K701 were never able to produce. The only niche where K701 and HE-500 are comparable is a big classical orchestra in which the wide K701 soundstage may put more air around the string sections (still instruments sound more "right" tonally with the HE500)

I am afraid I can't help there. What kind of music do you listen to in 5.1? Or is it movies?

That travel case is awesome. I wish mine came with that. I'd be happy to trade my original box with that any day of the week. I wonder if Fang will be selling it separately.

I just opened the box containing my HE-500, haven't even listened to them yet. I was very surprised that they no longer have the display box and it arrived with a semi-hard travel case with the cable in a velour pouch. At first I will admit I was a little bummed but quickly got over it as I assume some of it was to bring the price down to where it is (stellar pricing which allowed me to explore higher end orthos at all) and that people really wanted a more robust mobile case anyways. Has anyone else received this?

sorry for the crappy pics, just sitting on the couch opening stuff while having my birthday coffee....pretty sweet day so far.

they both have different sound signature..some people will like the K701/2 some will like the HE-500...there wont be a winner in this..me myself i have owned K702 before and sold them which i didn't regret because i don't really like the sound of it and bought the HD650 since then i like the sound signature of the HD650 and bought the HE-500 afterwards, because it's something like the HD650 but more refined in every departments the lows, mids and highs...for me HE-500 is the winner..IMO

isn't music recorded in stereo?? which means 2.0?? so it means that you use a program that changes/converts stereo into 5.1 mode??

yeah me too...but i mostly listen to the HE-500 nowdays..HD650 is getting dusty here...

Same here, actually I moved HD-650 to office rig.
Sometimes I felt that the more edginess of HD-650 (compared to HE-500, HD-650 is a really smooth phone with absolute terms) suited better for rock. But then I missed the extra bass slam of HE-500.
Anyway, I do feel that - apart from the price difference, need for more power and comfort - HE-500 wins HD-650 easily. And as you said, they have similar sound signatures (some have said that, actually, HD-600 has similar sound signature with HE-500).
