i currently have the JVC FX850. Is there anything better out there?
Pretty much anything on the amp list with an amp. Sorry to say it but an amp is required for real basshead levels. Just like with car audio, you can't get REAL bass without it. But you're in luck because amps aren't terribly expensive. The 2 most common budget choices around here are the fiio e12 (around $130) and the cayin c5 (around $160). If you're going to carry it every day then go for the fiio. The cayin isn't as durable.

From there you can use your jvc's, but the former bass king (sony xb90) is only $90 and they sound way out of their price range.

That's enough to check sub bass, crank it up.

Does it belong on the amped or un amped list?

Shortly after making my post I listened to a lot of Mekanik test tracks as well as this. I did not make it clear even though i said I didn't test the sub bass specifically, I did use my most challenging sub bass songs and was very happy. however you'll hear more mid than sub bass with the ATE-S, i think with the plain ATE there wwas less overall bass impact but it has more noticable sub bass rumble.

To tell the truth I have not tried it unamped yet so i'll let you know soon abou that.

If they made the 2.5 as a floor standing speaker system it would look something like this.

@jmills8: Standing in front of that sucker running at full tilt for any period of time would probably cause a complete loss of control over one's bodily functions.

Finally got around to trying it out unamped. I used my blackberry with some bass mekanik and E-40 MP3's.
Sounds liek the 90EX unamped, as in decent bass for not being amped, but leaves a lot to be desired.
Not sure if they'd make the top 10 list for unamped. To be honest I haven't heard most of the unamped top 10 IEMs.

With the Arrow 5TX I am going to say the ATE-S has a tiny bit more bass than the 90EX when I use bass boost II, hi freq.
90EX wins on sub bass though, more fun to listen to than the ATE-S with bass boost II on lo freq.
I think the plain translucent ATE (not the ATE-S) actually had more rumbly sub bass, but the tradeoff is less mid bass impact.

HBB if you can't get KZ's easily in Japan i'm happy to send you a set by plain registered mail.
