As these cans get old,the padding on the headband crumbles and gets sticky,i replaced it with a normal wrap around press stud one.
The earpads go flat and mine had a few small holes and a split where it stretches over the plastic earcup,I just got the std beyer grey velour pads which come with a new piece of foam to cover the driver.

Awesome and detailed thread. Thank you very much Zombie_X! I cant wait till you post some experience about DT series VS K701/2. I guess there will be more of different opinions on that battle. I know you say DT880 has a soundstage where everything is coming from the front and K702 presents evrything from the side. I have also read few opinions that were exactly opposite to yours so I expect very interesting discussion in the future.

Edit:  Anxiously waiting for part 3 now.  I just ordered a set of 880 600 ohms a few days ago, waiting for them to come in tomorrow... though I still have to wait for the amp now.  Reading all this really tempts me to ALSO pick up a set of 990 600's since they are on sale for 229.99 right now.  You guys are terrible influences.

Was doing some research on full-sized headphones and came across to this awesome thread of yours. Really appreciate your good work for the community!
 
I read in another thread and noticed that you had a pair of German Maestro 435S. I noticed that you have already sold them, but it would be great if you could do some simple comparison between the 435S and the Beyerdynamic's. I am particularly interested in DT770, and would like to know how midrange on 435S and DT770 compare.

From memory the 435S had a dryer (leaner) midrange, while the DT770 has more body to it. Also the 435S had more bass than the DT770, but the DT770's bass was more controlled. The treble on the 435S was not as "sharp" sounding as the DT770, but rather has a smoother treble. The 435S also had a much bigger soundstage.

I was thinking to get the 435S for their soundstage, bass, and low impedance, but from what I read, the dryer midrange might be a disappointment. I am spoiled by some really good quality mids from IEMs. So the search for full-sized headphones continues ^^

Well, I've just today had the chance to try the DT880/600 (mine) against the DT990/600, and the DT880/250 '05 and DT990/250 '05.
 
It pretty much mirrors what the OP says in which the DT990/600 has a much larger soundstage than the the rest however tbh, the DT990/600 had some height to the soundstage that the others didn't have thus made the soundstage well rounded, as opposed to the AKG K701 which sounds like the soundstage is tweaked at the extreme left and right ends thus the soundstage isn't as rounded. However I felt that the DT880/600, even though it had a smaller soundstage, the imaging and instrument separation was better than the DT990/600. I would argue, in terms of differences in sound signatures, the biggest difference is between the DT990's. the DT990/250 '05 has much too much of a V-shaped sound signature and the mids are noticeably recessed, with piecing treble. The DT990/600 is more balanced but it still slightly mid recessed, the treble is less piecing but still noticeably so. the DT880/250 '05 vs. DT880/600 inherit the same sound signature much more but sound fidelity wise sounds much better.

sorry but I want to ask about the dt880s 32 Ohm. I want to use them alone with my zune (without amp). Will they achieve the sound quality of the dt880 600 Ohm or just louder with amp?. I searched from here a lot and got many differ oppinions about them. "drive an headphone" means making it achieve its full potential SQ but not loudness right?.
 
Also, I am considering the dt770 32 Ohm since some dt880s users claim that the 880s is very bright if you don't drive them well.
 
I am just a student, so my budget is quite small, and still happy with my sr225. My main music genre is metal

As Zombie stated on his first post, the DT880/32 sounds a lot like the DT880/600 but with less refinement. I myself owned the DT880/32 and thought they were amazing. Though they can be driven without an amp, they too benefit quite a bit from amping. Though with a decent source, they will be driven quite loudly.
