Didn't know that. I always thought the salad bowls were the G-Cushions. Thanx!

Not a problem - you may still be right and the other person may be wrong. A quick google search shows just about everyone on the first page of results calls the big pads "salad bowls". But there was a post here a while back with a photo of an early GS-1000 with bigger wood bowls that looked like salad bowls, and they used that to argue their point about bagels/donuts being the pads, and salad bowls being the cups. An SR125 review on the Grado website refers to the wood body of the RS-1 and up as being salad bowls, while makes less sense than that funny looking cup in the photo. I'll post a link if I find it.

I think I know where what you are talking about came from maybe. The Grado factory tour PIX have a strange precursor to the GS1K that had Wooden Salad Bowl looking cupz on it. I've usually heard it referring to the padz though.

Ok then, some thoughts.

I don't know, but I have some doubts that the extra upper mids and highs that you get from "1000ing" can be blocked away sufficiently. We principally have the same problem with the Alessandros, but as they are tamer, it can be solved by felting.

Felting (or other materials) do something, but the effect isn't so prominent to make a shrill sound pleasant. If you use cotton wool or alike, you are likely to block everything totally and end up in the dull lowfi territory, utilizing a stock KSC75 would be easier and cheaper.

i do agree that too much will make it dull, bit i just add a little, as polyester fiber is very elastic, so they act like felt and a cushion to my ear at the same time

Nickchen I now know what you mean with Grado + GS1k pads. It indeed sucks the mids out a little. It doesn't sound all that bad though.

I just tried my 325i's against the Alessandro Ms-Pro's with the GS pads and "distance-rs".

I found the same difference among the two sets of cans as with the bowls pads...

That is the MS-PRO, was immensely more detailed and refined along the whole frequency spectrum and especially on bass and mids as well as lower treble,
but clearly much less powerful than the 325i.

I am now wondering whether the PS-1000 is just that a powerful MS-Pro. If the MS-Pro was also powerful as it was refined and detailed it would then be a class A+ headphone kind like a Sony R-10 phone

That is exactly what the PS1000 is, Mike. That additional power boost is damned fun, but it restricts its musical bandwidth a bit. I peronally wouldn't use a PS1000 for calmer stuff stuff such as Jazz, Folks or Classical.

The Ulti is still hardly to be beaten in respect of naturalness and musical bandwidth IMO.

I'm thinking about getting some distancers, I have a few questions...

Where would I go about getting them? Cost?

I have a MS-1i, with comfies. I don't want bowls from the description of them... nor an MS1000 I don't think. I just want to try out how the distancers would sound with comfy pads and everything else stock. Anyone know?

Not very good nor very comfortable. I found bowls to be considerably better (comfort and soundwise), but with distancers, the Jumbo pads are the place to be. It's worth it.

I've heard it's quite shrill with harsh highs and less bass. I don't think I want to give up bass and hurtful highs. Unless I'm wrong?

I quarter-modded the comfies as well.

Wow, I took a toilet paper roll, cut it in four sections. Two sections for each cup, and put elastics around them. Kinda like ghetto distancers :P.

Put my comfy pads over them, and it sounds surprisingly decent. Sound stage is a lot bigger. I'm hearing some things I never heard before, including cymbals being properly placed now. Sounds great.
