P7 are a lot of fun and the materials and construction are fantastic. Really good headphones IMO.    I do prefer the sound of the pm3 (definitely not by 300 euros though!) and the fit too but the p7's were definitely made better and looked prettier too. 

I dunno, I tried the h6 again 2 days ago and I didn't really find the bass punchy at all. It was just a touch too weak for my tastes. I was coming from my oppo pm-3's but I've heard the 1a's quite a few times now. It is less controlled than the h6 but I think it has a bit more punch as well.

How do these compare to the mdr 1r (not 'a') in terms of sound and comfort?   I kind of miss the sound of those headphones and could use a tough pair of headphones for the gym. Don't really like using my pm3's there as they're a bit heavy and the metal finish can get scratched pretty easily.

They would probably be pretty good for that honestly, they're well built, can swivel both ways, are comfy and have a pretty flat sound signature.

The denons are quite loose which is nice for comfort but left their performance as a portable headphone not so great imo. That's why I use my pm-3's while out and about - much tighter fit on the head but still really comfortable due to the super plush pads.   I thought the denons were a little...

Is there an oppo store in australia that would do earpad replacements? Because sending my headphones all the way to america or europe just isn't worth it imo.

A guide to removing the earpads safely would be great, I second this! My earpads have warped out of shape after using the headphones so much so I'd love to buy some replacements for them just as some extra security but it's useless unless I can attach them safely.

Hope that turned out to be the fix, Romani! Would be nice if you didn't have to send them off at all. Keep us updated if the crackling has indeed stopped or not.   I'm kind of curious to see what the drivers look like myself now too. I haven't actually taken the earpads off these before...

For what it's worth, I've had a crackling earcup in another pair of headphones caused by a hair pressed right up against the driver in that earcup. Once I removed it there weren't any more problems. Just something you could possibly check before sending them away!

I'm jumping aboard the scaling train too, pm-3 sounds much more alive when it's through something with a better dac and a more powerful amp than your average phone imo. Really makes them a lot more engaging to listen to.

Honestly I think you should just stick with the M2s instead of spending more time with the pm-3 in an attempt to make them your favourite portables. It seems like you really love your M2 (enough that you've convinced me to try them out whenever I get a chance) so if I was you I'd just cut down...

I agree about the folding into a ball, I find it far less useful than folding flat. For me here in aus the 1a is $150 cheaper than the m2. It's also a fair bit cheaper in japan too, kinda makes sense considering all sony stuff seems to be cheaper in their home country though. You guys in the US...

I had a pair of modded Mdr 1r-mk2 which I compared extensive with the 1a and I actually preferred the 1r... Only problem is they had issues with the cable connector which puts me off buying a new pair. The 1a would be perfect if it had just a tiny bit less bass bloat, it's just too overwhelming...

One nice touch with the p7 is you get a wide range of well recorded London symphony orchestra stuff for free with them too. I have to agree that they sound very nice for classical, very musical headphones. I might compare the pm-3s against the denons against my beloved Sennheiser hd250 II's...

Digital tunes is a pretty great place to buy stuff from too. No extra cost for lossless unlike other sites and they seem cheaper in general.
