Just listened to some Fostex T50RPs today... WOW!
I agree that having their 30 sec samples are not ok to post, but having 30sec samples of other musicians are probably ok to post for reference. I think I have some Krall's albums. Let me check if I have other albums.- GoldWarlock

BMF, could you provide 3-5 samples? Let's say something that demonstrated a good bass/sub-bass, female vocals, cymbals and maybe something with a lot of sound for instrument separation? I'll list and categorize those and will try to get more samples from from other modders.- GoldWarlock

First, we have other headphones which can be used as "reference". I have some music that I used for this but I'm not even sure if the original recording was properly recorded. I use speakers sometimes to verify the quality. Second, having a common testing material would help newcomers as well...- GoldWarlock

I have a suggestion, could people who mod and tune these headphones provide a sample music that they use? I'd like to get 30sec clips for testing "by-ear" for lows, mids and highs. You can PM me and I'll put it on my server or upload to any file sharing site. I think this would...- GoldWarlock

I tried Shure pads (whcih I have on T50 now) and they did not seal as well as T50 pads. I use 271s in the office and require 100% sound isolation.- GoldWarlock

As a side note, I put stock T50 pads on my AKG 271 and like them a lot. Brought some lows in AKG which was welcomed ;-) They fit nicely, even though original AKG pads were circular and T50 are oval.- GoldWarlock

My T50s are audibly different with DarkVoice 336 amp than sound cards (audigy and mac). I didn't like the amped version with stock ones but now that I modded them to my taste, they sound amazing with an amp. And yes, they are definitely less efficient than for example AKG 271s or AKG 701...- GoldWarlock

Quote: I just did it several days ago and with both stock and shure pads it was a big improvement. I could not listed to female vocals with the earside felt on. Now the shure pads actually have a kind of felt material which covers the driver when they are on, while stock ones do...- GoldWarlock

Quote: I received mine today. Gonna run them for a week but my general impression vs stock is that I lost some base and a bit of low boominess. I also can say that acoustic guitar sounds amazing. Soundstage improved. Need to listen to some vocal tracks now and then something...- GoldWarlock

I have done another round of modding yesterday and got a much better sound. Here are some details: - stock pads (waiting for shure ones) - bass ports 100% closed with a tape from outside - moderate amount of plasticine in baffle, small holes around the driver are not filled in -...- GoldWarlock

Quote: Nice. I'll be getting one then, just waiting on a release of ODAC and maybe will just buy a combo if they make that available. I'm using DarkVoice 336 myself but it overdrives the base right now. I tuned the tubes in DarkVoice to bring more base in my AKG 701s but that is not...- GoldWarlock

Have anyone tried modded fostex with O2 amp. What was the improvement over stock or over un-amped? Also I know it is a long shot but is there anyone using t50rps with DarkVoice 336i amp? What're your impressions?- GoldWarlock

So I finally modded mine like this: Plasticine on the back side of the driver baffle. Did not put anything in smaller holes around the driver itself Plasticine on the outer ring of the cup for better sealing. 2 slices of Dynamat in the back of the cup, a-la BMF 6.3 mod Thick sound...- GoldWarlock

AKG 271 alternatives
They have been used so much that pretty much everything is failing. Pleather pads are crumbling, the inlays are gone. One side has a bit of tremble in lows. The cable died too but I fixed it. I figured that just replacing the pads will be $50 (for velour). I also have 701s but they are...- GoldWarlock

AKG 271 alternatives
I'm thinking about replacing my 7 year old AKGs and not sure if I want to just buy same ones or try something else? I mostly listen to 70s Rock, Jazz and solo piano/violin classical and want closed, well isolating headphones. Preferably < $200. My lineage is FLAC->Foobar->coax SPDIF->DIY...- GoldWarlock
