SF Bay Area Meet on Sunday February 17, 2013 (the one which is really going to happen)
Rather last minute, but I'll stop by and bring a DT880, HE60, and a Wadia 121 DAC. Don't need a specific table, will just find someone to share with.- mikeliao

THE HOW: electrostatic vs balanced rig
With the OP's range of music, I'd say start with a balanced dynamic rig for its flexibilty and wide choice of headphones. Eventually, try a Stax setup for classical. It'll need some tweaking for pop and hip-hop though, or default to the dynamic setup. As wavoman predicts, you'll likely end up...- mikeliao

Getting the most from the Apogee Mini-Dac
Yes, the USB format conversion on the mini-DAC is useful. I've a mini-ME that I connect to the computer this way, although I'm seriously thinking about spending the 300 dollars or so to get it the firewire upgrade. Regarding my USB input issue, my music just sounds dead and uninspiring...- mikeliao

HD 595 sound quality for movies? Through TV or receiver?
Yes, a reciever with all the features you want would work fine driving the 595. I recommend against a reciever for mainly cost vs. quality in potential upgrade paths. Say you do get a reciever and everything works fine. When you're ready to setup a full speaker surround system, yeah, you can...- mikeliao

HD 595 sound quality for movies? Through TV or receiver?
Oh, if you're willing to pass up surround sound and dolby headphones, you can just get one of the many DAC/amp units out there. Or just plug the analogue out from your PS3 to a good inexpensive headphone amp. The sound will be stereo only. For movies, high quality stereo is better than cheap...- mikeliao

HD 595 sound quality for movies? Through TV or receiver?
Welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet. Actually, I've a wallet friendly solution. Don't buy a reciever until you're ready to setup a speaker system. In general, receivers aren't the equipment to drive headphones. There, saved you $500. I use HD595 straight out the TV when I'm just...- mikeliao

Headamp... 3months of waiting
Everyone's got different expectations. My worse experience (with a well known manufacturer who shall remain unnamed) was prepaying $1500 for a custom amp, waiting 12 months, receiving an amp built way off specs, returning it for rework, another 6 month wait, and then finally a working amp...- mikeliao

Headphone Sightings 2
I just got back from Tokyo. Now is it just me or have others noticed that full sized headphones/high quailty headphones are more commonly worn there than anywhere else in the world? Just in one subway trip, I noticed at least 4 Ety4s/p, and a half dozen various Shures. Also many full sized...- mikeliao

Getting the most from the Apogee Mini-Dac
Along with OP's post, another improvement is in the power section. The included convertor works okay, but I've found that clean regulated DC power makes the miniDAC sounds much better. On connectors, I'm feeding it AES3 and swapped out the original adaptors. Build your own with some higher...- mikeliao

IEM (SE530) + amps?
I've found for portable use, SE530's improve slightly with an amp. It definitly removes the hiss from ipods and the bass gets cleaned up a bit. Haven't used it with an airhead, but an old Porta Corda mkii and a newer C&C XO both work well. On the other hand, I'm usually lazy about bringing an...- mikeliao

Getting a GS-X
Congrats on the GS-X. I've had mine for about a year and use HD650 and W5000 on them. For balanced cabling on the HD650, I've tried DIY 650 cables, the red Clou, and DIY'ed Cardas. The red Clou and the DIY'ed Cardas sound very similiar but I prefer the Cardas because its a lot more flexible...- mikeliao

How to get a job working in a music studio
With the way studios are doing business, probably the job in highest demand is a lawyer. Specialize in contractual law or how to make individuals pay up! Kinda kidding. Buttkicker
I have an LFE hooked up to a recliner. Use it for movies on occassion but not for listening to music. The rumble is fun for movies but for music, it just doesn't feel right. Instead of coming from your chest cavity, its more of the entire chair shaking; a good, tight, powerful kinda shake, but...- mikeliao

Portable field recorders
I have a Edirol R09 and M-Audio Microtrak 24/96 that I use for binaural recording while wandering around. Both are nice and compact that I can drop in my pocket. They've also been used for recording meetings and such with their built in mics. Sound quality wise, I like the R09. May be just...- mikeliao

SE530 Made in China?
Yes, Shure SE530's are made in China now, specifically they're manufactured in a factory just outside of Suzhou. My SE530 box reads "Made in China" on the lower left corner much like your picture shows. However, mine doesn't have the french text. Could just be different packaging for different...- mikeliao

Is my concern over using IEM's reasonable?
I wouldn't worry too much about the IEM's frying due to sudden peaks, rather your ears may not enjoy them. I think everyone's who's used headphones for long enough has encountered a volume control bumped to a wrong position and a sudden blasts of sound. The problem usually is the volume control...- mikeliao

Ultimate Set-Up
In general... On the software side, the better the recording (higher bitrates or lossless audio) the better the sound. Get or make the best digital copy you can. Also, if you want to use equalizer or make changes to the sound, its best to do it in the digital realm. Hardware...- mikeliao

Stax SRM-007t XLR polarity
Well, I built the reverse polarity cables and checked that the output polarity is now correctly in phase ++ --. You know what, it sounds the same. I really can't tell the difference. CD Transport Help
The mechnical aspects of the transport (vibration, speed stability, durability, etc.) and the laser are the major points to look at. Not that many laser manufactures exist, so its really down to mechnical construction. There's not that many mass manufacturers (mostly Phillips in the CDM 7II and...- mikeliao
