    Can the M-Audio Q40s compete with upper mid-fi cans (HD595, DT770, A900)?

I'd venture to guess the Q40 matches up well with the other three cans. Those three all have glaring weaknesses, while from what I've read the Q40 has none. That's not to say they're better those the other three in every way possible. It's just better balanced and perhaps more versatile than the...

closed "beater" cans: Senn HD25SP or Ultrasone HFI-450?

I had the HD25SP, and "bad" would be an understatement. I suggest you look at the Denon D1000/1001 (or Equation RP21 if you need isolation). If you're really on a budget, I think the Panasonic HTX7's sound incredible for around $40.

Horrible build quality of CrossRoads Mylarone XB?

Well I read quite the opposite. The new i* series have significantly worse build quality. I've read a couple different impressions where they completely fall apart within hours. Unless they've improved the construction greatly since launch, I'd stay far, far away.

Any way to save cracked SHP895's before they fail for good?

It might just be cosmetic flaw due to sloppy design and that's it. I use my headphones very gently and I noticed the issue probably within a couple days after receiving them. They probably arrived like that.

Any way to save cracked SHP895's before they fail for good?

I have a pair of SHP895's with the same problem. I noticed the creasing/cracking not very long after I received them. However, it's held up for 3 years with no problems or increased damage. Then again... I've barely touched them in 2 years so maybe I'm not the best example .

J&R They have this image when you click the headphone section in their online storefront. You can spot a number of decent cans in that photo.

Bass, Mid, Treble - which is more important to you?

The first option is a cop-out! I'll go with Mids >> Treble >> Bass given my love with the K501.

help on what to buy senn hd 595 or hd 600

What kind of music do you listen to? Any particular reason you settled on the HD595/600? The HD580 mentioned needs an amp as well, something the OP doesn't want. Have you considered Grados or Denons? What kind of sound characteristics are you looking for?

Recommend an earbud (standard iPod style)

I suggest the AKG K14P/JBL Reference 210 if you like well extending highs and clarity. They are very bass shy though and I have trouble keeping them from slipping off my ears. Oh well, at least I didn't have to pay any for mine .

    Denon D1000 (D1001) vs. Grado Alessandro MS1

Who said the MS1's were uncomfortable? The Grado bowl pads are uncomfortable -- at first, until you break them in. The MS1's come with the cheap "comfies" pads which are indeed comfortable. A lot of people upgrade to HD414 pads anyway.

    Pads For Panasonic HTX7

The problem isn't so much cost as it is the poor quality of the regular HTX7 pads. I've never had the pads on any of my headphones -- even the cheap $5 drugstore types in my unenlightened days () wear out, ever. And these disintegrated in about 3-4 months. It's not worth it buying new pads that...
