I believe UAPP only does first unfold, so what you are getting sounds about right.
Thank you. So does it mean the max sample we can hear from a phone is cap at 96kHz?

I am trying to decide if I want to use my current V40 phone plus cayin Ru6 or a cheaper DAP, which one can give me better sound quality?

If the DAC chip in the phone has MQA capabilities (and UAPP supports Hi-Res on your phone), then higher maximum sample rates are possible.

So I believe the Dac in v40 does MQA capabilities, what setting should I do in UAPP to fully utilizing the existing hardware? I also want to try RU6, so anyway to bypass V40 dac and flow to RU?

Thanks

I only ever tried Tidal with MQA, when I was using my LG V30.
Since Qobuz has more music that I'm interested in, I canceled my Tidal subscription before I got my LG V35 (switched because AT&T said the V30 was not going to be supported on their "updated" network, but the V35 is).

There is apparently a Head-Fi Forum Thread about the LG V40, where questions about Tidal & MQA have been raised & answered.
I believe if you check (set to ON) -

UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> HiRes driver flags -> MQA (only on selected LG models)

- then UAPP should pass the full MQA unfolding to the Quad-DAC in your V40.

thank you! i am reading till about 300 pages now....so far i have not seen a clear guidance how to setup the UAPP....for example....do i need to touch any of the following setting?

1) Internal Audio Driver: Original Android or HiRes Direct? i assume i should choose HiRes direct?
2) Internal HiRes Audio: Bit Perfect Mode i am leaving it as On. Upsample: i am keeping it OFF. Buffer Size: untouched
3) Android Audio: Android Sample Rate: do i need to touch anything?
4) USB audio: Bit perfect mode, i am keeping it ON ( i do have an external dac dangle that i connect to my phone)

so i have a V40 and Ibasso DX220...i believe both supports MQA.....trying to setup UAPP right....if anything that i missed, please let me know. thank you all!!

I have a question related to UAPP. I have tidal and Spotify. Tidal is through UAPP. As an aside I can't use tidal when going through UAPP in the same way I can use it alone. The interfaces are different and functionality is very different to. It's limited. Anyway. My problem is with using Spotify with my hipdac and dragonfly red. When I plug in either, as usual the prompt comes up that asks if want UAPP to handle hi res audio and a second promt asking if want UAPP to handle whichever DAC I have hooked up. Ok. So yes to both, and up comes tidal within UAPP and all is well and good. First of all can someone variety that this is what happens for you?

When I play Spotify I have two say no to these prompts otherwise UAPP opens automatically with tidal within it. So then I go and try to play Spotify and it doesn't work I have to turn both DACs to fill volume to hear a barely audible audio. So it seems like as long as UAPP is installed I can play through Spotify. I've tried to explain it the best I can. Hopefully someone can help me. Fyi I have a android note10..

I'm due for an upgrade and I think I may get an iPhone. It's a difficult decision as I've been an Android user my whole life. I'm afraid I wouldn't know what to do with an iPhone. But unlike Android the iPhone is bit perfect ask the way through. So no need for any work arounds. I can have as many streaming services as I want to and I won't have to worry about not being able to use an external DAC and or amp. If also appreciate any thoughts from people who made the switch to the apple dark side. Thanks a lot.

The music files on my V35 are either FLAC or MP3, and I don't stream any MQA files, so these are the UAPP HiRes settings of interest:

UAPP -> Settings -> Internal audio driver = HiRes Direct driver
UAPP -> Settings -> MQA -> MQA passthrough = On
[for DACs that can unfold MQA]
UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> HiRes driver flags -> MQA (only on selected LG models) = On
UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> HiRes driver audio format = Auto
UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> Bit perfect mode = When possible
UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> Upsample = Off
UAPP -> Settings -> Internal HiRes audio -> Use with Bluetooth output = On
UAPP -> Settings -> Android audio -> Play through Android = On
[if you use the Headphone or Bluetooth output]
UAPP -> Settings -> Android audio -> Android sample rate = Variable rate
UAPP -> Settings -> USB audio -> Upsample = Off
UAPP -> Settings -> USB audio -> Bit perfect mode = When possible

UAPP can only play stored files without drm, ALAC or otherwise, or stream direct from Qobuz or Tidal. No Apple music support, nor likely to be.
Exactly, all of my CD rips are in ALAC, as are many of my download purchases from HDtracks and others, and they all play fine in UAPP up to 24/192, no issues.

Apple Music is likely using DRM, I can't think of any other reason why you'd not be able to play those files in UAPP but it's really an apple Music question as to how they allow downloads to be played. In other words you didn't purchase those tracks, just downloaded them for offline playback? Yeah that won't work.

Ok tried that using R8 and no go- I get the message ‘failed to find HiRes DAC.’

My usual settings have Android Audio to ‘Device native sample rate’ and ‘internal hires audio’ ‘Bit perfect’= ‘when possible’. Upsampling settings are irrelevant to the issue. If I change the above settings I get the problem noted in para 1 above. Settings as is will allow play everything but when I try to select EQ I am told ‘Bit perfect mode!’ (! not mine).
I posted this a long while ago and received no response but today found a partial solution!

I recently acquired a Cayin RU-6 USB Dongle, and find that when it is plugged into the R8, somehow this invokes a different set of software rules, allowing me to turn bit-perfect off and then all the internal add on tools work ie PEQ, morphit) . RU-6 does not unfold MQA so I maybe missing that action though I don’t think so or at most only the last unfold as the RU-6 is showing 384 kHz (it’s max) in oversampling mode.

I’m not sure I can explain this - but as RU-6 is itself and excellent R2R dongle I’m quite happy to make the discovery. When I am out and about with the R8 and want to use PEQ in UAPP I will plug it in happily.

It seems that when the R8 USB is not engaged, the internal DAC on my R8 needs to be in Bit perfect mode to do its work. It does unfold MQA completely (16x to 786 KHz) and plays DSD fine also, but I cannot access PEQ when Bit Perfect is on. If I turn Bit Perfect mode off when USB is not engaged, I always get the error message “cannot find Hi-Res Dac’ and music will not play..

If anyone has any suggestions I’d appreciate.

When using EQ will involve DSP processing therefor wil not be Bitperfect anymore. Therefor when it says "Bitperfect mode!" means it cannot execute command since you are in Bitperfect mode.

  1. It maybe in your upsampling settings that the device will output to 384kHz, or it is the max of your device.
  2. Need to do its work on what?
  3. PEQ uses DSP to process. Your signal will not be bitperfect anymore. Or in vice versa: when in bitperfect, PEQ is disabled.
  4. Because you turned off USB. It needs USB connection to communicate with your source device in order to play.
