I've just ordered the ISK HF2010 the other day after reading this thread, searching for a cheap decent cheap headphones, and now I saw the Marantz MPH-2 are going for $17, should I get it?

I think there's a few reasons why they're so cheap, just have a look at the Amazon reviews. Apparently the sound is an absolute mess.

the isk hf-2010 does indeed sounds bad in stock form, recessed mids, badly tuned v-shape with piercing highs and sloppy bass response, luckily its one of the few headphones that reacts wonderfully to various mods and they could sound whatever sound signature you like.

Really? From reading 50+ pages in this thread I got the impression that they sound pretty good stock. I want a wide sound stage and as natural sound as possible, what mods can you recommend?

they sound alright stock if your kinda new to this hobby, as you move to better sounding headphones you'll notice how bad it sounds, treble is quite harsh and sounds grainy, main reason is bcoz of the velour pads that come with it. difference also with the isk hf2010 to the hi2050 is the lack of dampening they used.,anyways here my mod.

2 answers:

1. Hell, yes.

2. But it can't be legit at that price.

I've owned 4 pairs of ISK MDH9000 clones, of which the MPH-2 is one. 2 of those were/are MPH-2s (kept one, gave the other to my brother).

If you can get any of the clones for ~$50, don't think twice. It's a warm, ear-friendly, fun closed back design.
