If you want more sparkle, you can cut a small hole in the foam cover (sometimes called coin mod). Top end (10khz+) will come alive after this simple mod
Thanks for the tip. I might give these a go after the burn in period.
@SHAMuuu - if you're interested you can find out whether it's an early or late model raised nameplate. Remove the earpads, remove the disc - dark driver screen earlier (3rd version) or bright driver screen later (4th version). I am surprised you say it is not an all-rounder as it is fairly neutral that should make the musical genre irrelevant. The treble was one of my favourite aspects of this headphone (before I sold it) and it never had the glare of my Beyerdynamic DT880.
Looks like a 4th version , look like 600 drivers. Maybe these have more colorations than the early Ireland or German version with less mid bass hump and roll offs on both ends. I say all this relatively, and yes they are neutral in a sense, but there is "enhancement" which seem to make these musical much like the Sextett. As one can differentiate this color between a Sextett to Monitor transition AND VICE VERSA A/B, it is the same when i go from 580 to 880 or dt48/480. The enhancement is great and very engaging, however in complex pieces like Retro Synthwave , the wrong parts of the beats jump out, and the "musicality" characteristics cause issues in the delivery, precisely in the sub bass and upper treble which due to roll off and mid bass hump slighly haze the fast beats. 90s dance/ Hip hop music also is not the best on these, though no necessarily bad. I also prefer Beyer for classical, where the treble edginess is a plus IMO. This is why i don't consider these an all rounder.
However, i don't think anyone recommends these for hip hop or retro synthwave or 90s music or as the go to for classical.
In saying that, i spent time listening to Sarah McLaughlin, Roy Orbison and their voices come out like explosions of magic.
Bands like Tragically Hip shine, whereas a group like Thievery Corporation can struggle at times with their incorporation of some Hindustani classical instruments with their other strange beats.
I thought it did Rock/Metal pretty well, but I found those shine more on Sextett (LP w/1540 pads)
I hope that explains my early impressions of why i found these as excellent, but not necessarily for all genres. But i don't think this is news by now lol. They are what 25 years old? I consider something like a dt150 more of an all rounder.
I don't need to say how legendary these are, and its very clear why they are. From its modular design to its musical signature.
Whats funny is the one thing i was concerned with most was painting the grills or swapping in 600/650 grills, but now i love to look at it.
