Hard to beat combo, especially for the price. You'd need big bucks to have better result in my opinion. Congrats

Thanks man. It truly is

.  I think everyone with HD580 can listen these cans even the next 10 - 20 years  because of the spare parts from Sennheiser

I have come full circle with my 580s which I bought new about 16 years ago. I stopped using them a couple of years ago and had them ready to sell. I bought a pair of Beyerdynamic T90s which on first listening sounded so clear and detailed, but after a few weeks I found them almost painful as they were so harsh and brittle sounding. I then bought Sennheiser Momentums which were too bass-heavy and lacked the soundstage and detail of the 580s. A pair of AKG Q701s followed, but I soon fell out with them as they simply did not match the quality of the 580s. I auditioned HD700s and 800s, but didn't find either of them significantly better than the 580s, to my ears anyway. I then unpacked the 580s and realised what a fantastic sound they produced. I have also recently bought a second hand pair of Audeze LCD-2s which I think are stunning, but my trusty 580s remain fantastic to listen to and I cannot believe that an old pair of headphones that I almost sold for peanuts could still give me as much enjoyment as they do as well as compare so well with newer and much more expensive headphones.

Funny how that works... I've done basically the same thing. On my end, it was the amps I had that was holding my HD580 back...

Listened to mine next to a HD600 and HD650 on a Bottlehead Crack (w/ speedball) and was disappointed that my hd580 had tighter, cleaner bass and more detail separation than both of the more expensive siblings...

I will be keeping my hd580s for the long haul...

question for you good people -

i just replaced the earpads on my HD580 Precisions with the pads directly from Sennheiser, these: http://en-us.sennheiser.com/050635-earpads-pair

I called and asked them and they said that these pads would work.

I just received them, and replaced the old ratty ones, but they don't stay in place very well.  Anyone have ideas about how to fix that?  I seem to remember that happening way back when I first got them, but it hasn't happened in a decade since.

You just have to press firmly to attach the plastic rings

I don't know if this is legit or too good to be true but someone has 8 NOS 580s for sale.
I really want to bite to complete my collection.

Hi
I am ordering the HD 580s, but want to put a HE60 headband pad on it (mainly for aesthetics).Does anyone know whether the one here: http://www.custom-cable.co.uk/sennheiser-he60-foam-headband-pad.html  is foam with a leather/ pleather cover (as on original HE60), or just foam. If it is just foam, is there anywhere I can get a pleather/ leather pad except for from Sennheiser, where it is extremely expensive?

Thanks
Chris

I have both, you're much better off with the HD650 head pad. I've done extensive testing. The only benefit of the Orpheus pads are the extra depth if you have a shorter head-to-ear distance. But ultimately, comfort is sooo much better with the HD650 pads.

I normally don't chime in on these matters, but I figure it'd be best if I shared my thoughts in case I can talk you out to save you some money.

Is it leather though?

Nope, it's a leatherette material. Give it a few years of heavy use and you'll have it flaking all over the place. I bet you could make a higher quality one. That's why I bought the orpheus headpad in the first place. Ultimately, I bought the HD650 pad, and was all the happier.
