The Fiio X5 Thread
Oct 20, 2015 at 10:18 AM Post #18,541 of 19,652
Just received the 256GB PNY USB Turbo which people say worked with Fiio X5 OTG function.

Copied one folder of music, and it recognized it and it worked.

Copied 100 GB of music folders onto it.

Fiio X5 says no music found.. What?

Anyone know what is up? I am on FW 2.4 or 2.5 (not sure)

Just a guess but, maybe its the way it is being allocated? what is the card formatted at?

The card is formatted at Fat32.

I have to say I have had this issue on my other 64 GB USB aswell...
In very similiair manner. and I dunno how I fixed it. Recopying everything a few times.. I think. possibly.
Anyway it is very very strange.

I am trying to recopy now. but taking a long time with this size. And im just wondering how this is possible to begin with...

Also on the other USB stick if the music gets recognized, it will work thereafter indefinitely. But possibly, not sure, it might stop working if copy new files onto it... very weird.

I use Fiio 2.4. it says for 2.5 Support for exFAT-formatted microSD cards;

Does this count for OTG aswell..?
I keep trying to use guiformat to format my usb stick to fat32. but I keep getting in use get error 32..

Use the format tool in the X5 itself. Go to the System Setting - select Format - choose your card slot. This is the best way to have the card formatted with the proper allocation unit size for optimal performance.

Easy.

Edit: Not sure if this will work for OTG applications as I haven't tried it. I need to read more closely. :xf_eek:

X5 is temperamental with its OTG, this is well noted, unsure as to why, I believe there was some discussion re this at some point... Sure the USB stick isn't faulty, just an unhappy player!

Yeah.. I think it has to do with how the folders are copied to the USB stick or something?  I dunno.

I tried copying over 3 times 150 GB over to my 256 GB PNY USB stick... the 3rd time it saw my music!! and from my experience it will stay like this aswell as I don't copy over new things.
And I didn't do anything strange...
Im sure the usb stick is official orderd from amazon.. and my other usb stick has it too, bought at big wallmart like store here.

Now if I want to update and use the remaining 100 GB. im scared lol. Ill probably have to copy over everything multiple times again.. doesn't work on the fly. it seems.

But still I'd like to find the root cause of this... isn't there no one on the internetz that knows this?

My guess is it doesn't working well with big capacity drive (256 GB) for usb otg. I don't have that big flash drive so I can't test it personally.
Have you try with a smaller size (32/64 GB)? If it's no problem, I think that's the root cause

I have 2 64gb cards (1 in each slot) both of which were formatted in the player it self and have a little over 7200 songs and all works perfectly. I loaded the music with the mSD card in my computer though as I think it loads faster.

As said, there is a general HARDWARE or FIRMWARE (unsure which) issue with the X5 and OTG, it works, then stops working, or becomes intermittent, nothing to do with the stick or the reader you're trying to add...

Re file limit, that was fixed early on, but was only a problem if you used library view, if you used folder view that was never an issue (moved onto the QP1R which has the same firmware foibles, so glad I got used to that on the X5).

FWIW this was fixed in an earlier firmware update (mine, as I'm lazy is sat on 2.4 and with both slots filled with 200gb cards, library reads as 17k+ tracks, but takes an eternity to cache them all!)
