Last (slightly belated) mail call of 2024:

Dunu DK3001BD Brain Dance
Came for the treble, stayed for the bass

Plays it safe in the sibilance region - perhaps too safe even (is there such a thing?) There seems to be a careful dip in the sibilance region, such that recordings that are reliably sibilant don't as much as hiss, which comes across as almost unnatural. Not sure how I feel about this yet. Admittedly, the effect is more obvious in current mode than voltage mode, so YMMV.

Impedance adapter

The 4.4mm balanced variable impedance adapter arrived meantime so I tried it as well, but honestly it isn't for me. Yes, it makes the bass bigger and fatter, but at the expense of the mids and highs. Music simply sounds less interesting and less fully realised without that extra treble and midrange information. The difference was already palpable at as low as 10 ohms, although I went as high as 80.

(The last IEM that I regularly enjoyed with an impedance adapter with was the CK100 Pro, one of the last Audio Technica IEMs to be made in Japan, before the Fukushima quake iirc. It had extremely hot treble, even by my standards way back then and let's just say they don't make them like that anymore.)

As far as the Drain Brance goes, its bass is best served by lots of power - failing which, I suppose one could try EQ.

Tl;dr - Source sensitive. Bass driver scales up like crazy. I can't get enough of it.

Happy New Year, everyone!

There are many fake andromeda out there. IMHO, it’s better to get more photos and check with folks on CFA thread before pulling the trigger.

Oh, and you need to ensure you have DAC/amp that output low volume and has no hissing noise. Andromeda is notoriously difficult to drive.

Other than that, $350 for an iconic IEM is okay, i think. Not the best value for money given how capable the latest wave of $200 IEMs are, but still, it’s the Andromeda.
IMHO, $350 for an almost decade old IEM? When you can take that $350 and either score a very very good 2024 IEM or put a little more money and get something like the Brain Dance or used Noir or Timsok or MG600? Yeah. Not sure investing in a picky dinosaur is a smart move, despite it's legacy.

The MG600 are beautiful iems, i could've got them brand new for $400 but i already have the ikko OH7 (flagship single DD iems).
I never heard about Timsok, are they good?
Better than the MG600?

There are plethorea of new iems what will be atack old campfire tech. And reason why campfire right now goes with planar like astrolith and clara. They must because his old ba is on level midfi in overall performance. Ara is still on clarity still better but something like timsok is more fuller but touch more digital but is close fight campfire is still touch more natural in bass touch on clarity better detail is there and there but is in touch fight and overall timsok is touch better but not in technicality. Important i prefer ara on fiio and timsok on dc elite. If you paired timsok too warm will be too warm and technicality too lost.

Happy new year to all of you, last post here before the new year.

Been a wild ride for me with so many good audio products, also met some nice new folks that made the audio journey even better. I share music daily with friends and also in threads on head-fi, this year I have explored much more genres than usual. Still the list here is for the most rooted into my favorite genres of metal, jazz and electronica.

I have put them in different categories and its more than 10, I have not ranked them. Top 3 is most likely Anthesis, Absolute Elsewhere and Endlessness.

Metal Rock Prog

Blood Incantation - Absolute Elsewhere

This is an epic cosmic death metal album with elements of prog rock, an absolute journey and treat for metal enthusiasts. It's an album that's best going in blind to get the full experience, it's so much going on and gets better every time.

Opeth - The Last Will And Testament

Swedish Opeth pre-released two singles with track 1 in September and track 3 in October, already knowing then it would deliver the sound I love from Opeth. This is progressive metal and a return to the more hard style many of us loved from their earlier works, back is the gritty growling while we still get the more normal melodic parts.
There is so much going on, and they show they are masters of making diverse tracks blending many styles.

Suldusk - Anthesis

Dark black metal, very melodic and has a dark folk vibe to it. While it has some very melodic parts it's also going quite hard at times, not for everyone. Heard 3 tracks from this album and instantly bought the record. If you enjoy this and want more, the first album is much more relaxed if you want the style here without the black metal.

Swallow The Sun - Shining

I had lots of anticipation for this release, I love Swallow The Sun and their doom metal. This release has lots of different opinions from the crowd, some love it while others think it's one of their worst. I find it great and as good as their previous Moonflowers, this album accompanied me on repeat during the Dublin Watercooler meet and might have colored feelings for it.

We get gritty growling and distorted guitars, but also more melodic parts that are beautiful and sad. I guess this is to soft for many who love Swallow The Sun, it's more welcoming to folks who are not as accustomed to intense and dark metal.

The Pineapple Thief - It Leads To This

Latest album from The Pineapple Thief, I love the prog rock they make. This is also another good release, while maybe it's not their best work it's still a good one. This is also a record that is not too intense, so even folks that are usually not rock enthusiasts can enjoy it.

Clean vocals and instruments, and even the more intense parts are still not too busy.

Electronica

Polygonia - Dermatology

I recently discovered German Polygonia, she captures an organic and clean style of electronica that is just magical . She has made an deep hypnotic style of techno, the record is perhaps here best so far.

Djrum - Meaning’s Edge

An electronica EP that's a mix of many styles, we get deep vibrant dubstep and more into IDM and techno. I found this album as I discovered the relaxing IDM release Dreams & Whispers that is also on the list here, very different style but shows that the UK artist is able to deliver great music within many electronic genres.

BOLIS PUPUL - Letter To Yu

Ambient deep house electronica, a record that touches upon some of life's themes with loss, family and making peace with it all. Inspired by his Asian and European roots, he has a wide range of tracks that is very special to listen to and keeps itself interesting every time I put it on play.

The Black Dog - Other, Like Me

Dark ambient electronica, one of the masterpieces within electronica this year if you ask me. Deep and intimate with strong basslines, there are a lot of thoughts behind this album that explores the artist psyche.

Bartosz Kruczynski- Dreams & Whispers

Another electronic ambient album, but this time more on a relaxing side.

Its two parts of the album, one being the Dream and the other Whispers. From the artist itself: The A-side, “Dreams,” is charged with subtle movement, rhythms spreading out like rings around skipped stones, while the B-side, “Whispers,” plunges into a zone of shadows and hush. The two complementary moods flow into one another like the faces of a Moebius strip, yielding an album that’s intuitively shaped and rich in emotion.

Alva Noto - Xerox, Vol.5

Last instalment of the Xerox project, it started in 2007 and has been a long road for electronic artist Alva Noto.

Quote from artist:
Xerrox Vol. 5 has a lot to do with farewell. Not only the farewell to the series itself, which I’ve nurtured as a ‘child’ for almost two decades, but also there were many farewells to people who were very close to me. I believe these people are recognizable in this music, and the pieces also serve the function of preserving these individuals in some way. It would be completely wrong to say that this isn’t a personal album—on the contrary, it’s a very emotional, personal album—of course.

Oliver Patrice Weder - The Shoe Factory

Contemporary music with elements of ambient electronica and neo classical, I just find this very beautiful and the music captures a cinematic feel. It's minimalistic and beautiful, perfect for relaxing down. In fact it's a record I have used some times when stressed this year, putting in pair of favorite IEMs and closing my eyes while lying down.

GoGo Penguin - From the North Live in Manchester

UK trio GoGo Penguin, could call this more traditional modern jazz. The trio has piano, double bass and drums, the style is more minimalistic but always very enjoyable. I was starving for a new release from them, and while not as good as some of their studio albums this is also great.

Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes

This is a more mellow record than his previous ones with also less psychedelic style, would say this is funk and soul. I think the critics are quite mixed on this release but for me it's his best. It is more suited to background music than going deep into it, still the mastering and music is beautifully done. He has a very soothing voice that puts you at ease, One and Only track being my favorite.

Kalandra - A Frame of Mind

Norwegian/Swedish group that mixes pop and Nordic folk music with even some prog rock, the vocalist has a beautiful and dreamy voice. The weakest track is maybe the first while the rest I really enjoy, as the headphone listening thread probably noticed I have shared this many times since the release in September.

Last review of the year complete - the TSMR ARMOR, definitely a set that took me by surprise in a very positive way, and brought out the inner mids in me!

Review HERE

I will, I just reached my limits in most aspects/dimensions here after all.
(Detailed explanation omitted).
For one thing, I simply vouched not to buy anything that is reviewed in this hobby anymore - and that alone happened to bring anyone totally out of the game. (Imagine a hypothetical world of just reviewers of free samples and manufacturers. Discovery pushes closer and closer to these inhumane limits... after all, most fare reviewers, like baskingshark, left).

I will surely enjoy the music with the gear that I am fortunate to have.

What can be always counted for in Discovery thread - strong encouragements for one's next gear acquisition and the peer support/motivation to firmly stick to your decisions :)
You will serve as a stern guardian to my covenant of taking a break for at least 400 days after this year, Sir!

Happy New Year, Everyone - enjoy your best chain and cherish and support the music!
Yeah. I've been in an out of this thread and Head-fi for 13 years now. When I took a long break, it was inadvertent, and not announced or planned. Life just took me out of the every day rigors of logging in (that and losing my password for what was FreeWheelinAudioLuv). COVID isolation and severe medical issues brought me back and I've been a regular ever since. The one thing that is most certainly NOT a motivation to walk away is seeing my compadres getting gear for review. I don't run with that kind of jealous streak in me, or the level of cynicism that would implore me to look at my fellow enthusiasts with a conspirators eye, just because they have cool schitt and they are contributing to the hobby. It's like being dismissive of the fact that half the gear they share and review they paid with their own hard earned cash, so receiving free gear somehow negates that fact? Like in my instance. I've spent 3x the amount of money on my own gear than the sum total of all the review gear I've been bestowed. My reviews are pretty consistent across "free gear" and purchased gear. So yeah, make what you will of that? If I take a break, it'll be to concentrate on family or my business, or those things just naturally take on more time than I can then allot to Head-fi or what a good honest review requires. Either way, it's not going to be announced (at least I don't think so), and it most certainly won't be because of external forces (i.e. reviewers), but internal demands that take precedence over my free time here.

As for baskingshark, probably shouldn't speak for him and the reasons he left? He was quite vague as to his reasons, and not sure his leaving was motivated by his "disdain for free samples or pressure from manufacturers", but what seems to be just burn out with reviewing and the demands for impressions from regular joe's. That's just what I gleamed from his goodbye post, but I could be wrong?

But yes, Happy New Year and hope your 400 day sabbatical is healthy, positive, constructive, and prosperous?!

MAIL CALL!!!

Surprisingly, the Tanchjim Bunny arrived before the Volume S and the Aurora Ultra, which are both still in transit. Oh but the Tangzu Legend was shipped, so those waiting for impressions, should have that by later next week?

Also landing...

XINHS B02 cable for the AFUL Performer 5+2 (green and black colorway matching, so let's see about any sonic synergy?), and the XINHS Silver & Black 8 modular cable for the KZ PR2. This one I did get to try out, and I'm very impressed with the synergy with the PR2.

Though I have 3 more cables incoming (those dirt cheap Nici cables), two are designated for my Legend (3.5mm) and the Klean. One might end up on the EBC80 if it's high enough quality? But for now, all of my IEMs have been colorway synergized, and I'm happy with it all.

Haven't given the Bunny much ear time, so that's next after the AFUL P7 listening session.

The DK3001BD is without question one of my top highlights of 2024 - probably neck and neck with DITA Mecha right now for trying to decide on my top IEM of the year.

I've recently added two DAPs to the collection and very excited to hook up Braindance among others to hear how they perform with different and more powerful sources to what I already had. Listening to Durandal at the moment via the DX340 and by far the best I've heard them.

I really hope I can find a way to get ahold of the Mecha for a full on review. It was one my highlights from CanJam even with my very brief time with it. I am a bit disappointed in the final pricing though. I had heard rumblings of $500-700 which would be super competitive at that price.

I have a different reason for avoiding the Mecha. Aside from the impressions being NOT my sonic preference, I still suffer from PTSD from my experience with the Dita Truth, which I spent the second most money on an IEM in my life, and got one of the top two great disappointments of my audio life. $800 for a single DD?! I'm not getting suckered by Dita into paying that much again LOL That's why I love the Dita P-M so much. $300.00. Perfect symmetry. Helped me get over my PTSD for Dita (but not $800 single DD's LOL). Sorry Dita. Now if you want to send me a review sample, or send one to @thaslaya, I'll just borrow his? My god, I'm full of assumptions! LOL
